Sporting's bad form continues. This time they conceded four at a strong Sporting Braga and only managed two in reply. There were five goals in
a thrilling first half. Barroso got a penalty on 20, Artur Jorge made it 2-0 three minutes later, Kutuzov
reduced the margin a minute after that, Barroso got his second on 35 and Tello gave Sporting a chance just before half time. Glauber made it 4-2
three minutes into the second half, and that broke the back of Sporting's resistance. To make matters worse, Sporting's central defender Hugo got a red card on 67 minutes.
Boavista once again slipped back into mediocrity, and Paços de Ferreira once again proved their worth as giantkillers, when the 'Panthers' went down 3-1 at Paços. Boavista actually started better, and
Silva took just two minutes to follow up a Sanchez free-kick to score. But within ten minutes of the start, Paços were back in it, Carlos Carneiro
planting a ball headed on from a corner. Paços provided the better football for most of the game, and on 67 went in front through Renato Queiros, his first goal for the club, from a pass by Mauro. Mauro
got the third ten minutes from time, heading in a cross from Leonardo. Boavista are a shadow of the sides of recent seasons, Paços once again a pleasant surprise under shrewd coach José Mota. Belenenses
climbed to third in the table with a 2-0 win at Varzim. Antchouet on 35 minutes and Verona
on the hour got the goals, while Varzim's Quim Berto missed a penalty on 75 that could have put them back in the game. Moreirense got their first points of the season by beating fellow strugglers
União de Leiria 2-1 at home. Demetrios and Armando put the home side two up, with Douala pulling one back on 58. But it wasn't enough and UDL continue their disappointing season.
Vitória de Setúbal couldn't repeat the feat of a week ago when they beat Marítimo 5-0. This time a 1-1 draw was the best they could do at home to Beira-Mar. Hugo Alcântara got Vitória's goal on 26,
Ricardo Sousa equalising for the visitors in added time at the end of the first half. Gil Vicente were in front after 11 minutrs through Manoel on their trip to the Azores. Santa Clara
, though, got two before half time (João Pedro and Ceará) and went in 2-1 up. João Pedro missed a penalty for Santa Clara early in the second half, but Ceará got his second almost immediately and
Sandro got a fourth. Manoel scored his second for Gil halfway through the second half, but the team from the North were powerless to turn it around and 4-2 is how it stayed. 29/09/02
The island of Madeira had a word or two to say with respect to the top of the table positions Saturday, its clubs Nacional and Marítimo both making hard work for
Benfica and FC Porto respectively. But it was newly-promoted Nacional, who had won one and drawn one before Saturday, that caused the upset. Benfica
travelled to Madeira with a 100% record of four wins from four, but they came away with the same. Nacional managed to restrict the Águias to occasional chances, and then on the hour Serginho, with his
fourth of the season, scored what was to be the only goal of the game, a tap-in after Ricardo Esteves had made the line on the left and crossed low. Marítimo
travelled to the Antas and gave a good account of themselves against FC Porto, but Os Dragões have in Brazilian midfielder Deco
a winner of matches, and so it proved once again Saturday. On 11 minutes he picked the ball up 30 metres out, strode on, took two defenders one way, sent them the other and clipped a perfect low shot past the otherwise tidy Nélson in the Marítimo goal. Marítimo fans, fresh from a 0-5 pasting at home to Vitória de Setúbal, might have thought "Here we go again!", but this time their team was more together and FC Porto had few chances to extend their lead. But the three points put them on top in what is, until next weekend, an unassailable lead of one point over Benfica..
28/09/02 Angolan striker Pedro Mantorras, a great Benfica hope for the future but injured of late, returns to the squad for the Águias' trip to Madeira to face newly-promoted
Nacional. The Benfica squad: Goalkeepers: Moreira and Nuno Santos; Defenders: Armando, Argel, João Manuel Pinto, Ricardo Rocha and Hélder; Midfielders: Petit, Tiago,
Ednilson, Andrade, Drulovic, Roger, Zahovic, Simão, Carlitos and Miguel; Forwards: Mantorras, Nuno Gomes and Féher. Benfica are hoping to extend their 100%
SuperLiga record to five games. Nacional's tiny ground, with seating on one side only and a capacity of a mere 3,000, has generated some pre-match controversy, both for the fact that Benfica fans have
been allocated only a small number of tickets and for the fact that the Estádio Engenheiro Rui Alves, at an altitude of 500 metres on a hillside in Madeira, is prone to fog when it's an evening kick-off, as is
the case with this game. 25/09/02 Boavista, with influential captain Erwin Sanchez
back after injury, put in a better performance than of late but did not have it their own way against a determined Santa Clara. The Bolivian midfielder missed a penalty on 55 minutes but atoned a minute later
with a pinpoint corner for Silva to score with a free close-range header. Santa Clara had central defender Sérgio Nunes sent off five minutes from time for pulling back Cafú, through on goal. The 1-0
scoreline remained to the end. 24/09/02 FC Porto put paid to Vitória de Guimarães' 100% record Monday with a hard-fought 2-0 win. Deco
put Porto in front in the first half, Guimarães had Rafael sent off, FC Porto had Maniche sent off in the second half and Tiago confirmed Porto's win a quarter of an hour from time. It was a home game for
Vitória but was played in Felgueiras while Vitória's stadium undergoes improvements. There was crowd trouble
during and after the game. Proceedings were halted several times when broken seats were thrown onto the pitch by Guimarães fans, and after the final whistle, rival fans were involved in fights and stone-throwing outside the ground.
Sporting's gloomy start to the season continues. They could do no better than a 0-0 draw with Varzim
at Alvalade. Sporting's scoring problem in the absence of Mário Jardel continues, and pressure builds on Romanian coach Bölöni - although president Dias da Cunha has insisted that there is no crisis at the club.
23/09/02 The most striking result Sunday was Vitória de Setúbal's 5-0 thrashing of Madeiran side Marítimo ... in Madeira! Rui Lima (18 minutes), Sandro
(28) and Miguel Ferreira (35) gave the Sadinos a virtually unassailable lead at half-time, and they extended it in the second half with goals from Jorginho (62) and Rui André (87).
Marítimo coach Nelo Vingada
did not hide from criticism, and said: "Something has to be changed, starting with attitude. Maybe the coach has to be changed, too ... It was a very bad day and a perfomance that was too bad to be true."
Another feat was the 2-0 victory by newly-promoted club Nacional at normally difficult Beira-Mar. Two similar goals by Serginho, one before half time and one fifteen minutes into the second,
both assisted by Gouveia, gave the Madeiran side their first victory. Beira-Mar's Senegalese striker Fary was sent off in the second half. Also newly-promoted Moreirense
clocked up their fourth straight defeat, going down 1-2 at Sporting Braga. Nor could they take advantage of playing against ten men for half of the match, Zé Roberto sent off just before half-time.
Moreirense themselves had Orlando sent off in the dying minutes, but by then it made no difference either way. Barroso
missed a penalty for the home side after 34 minutes, but scored another on 50 to save his blushes. Alex put the visitors on equal terms after 72, but Braga nosed in front three minutes from time, Barroso
getting his second from a free-kick. Moreirense are now the only team with no points. Wooden-spoon rivals Académica, the third promoted club, got their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw at
Gil Vicente. Paulo Alves put Gil in front on nine minutes, and the lead lasted until very near the end when central defender Tonel shot for the equaliser. Meanwhile, Portuguese international 'keeper
Vítor Baía has been left out of the FC Porto squad for the away match with Guimarães Monday. The player is not thought to be injured, and it is rumoured that there is a rift between him and coach
José Mourinho. Nuno is first choice 'keeper and Paulo Santos has been called up to take Baía's place on the bench. 22/09/02 Benfica
scored their fourth victory from four Saturday and remain perched on the top of the SuperLiga for at least another week. Their game against União de Leiria
was not without controversy, but overall they won with merit (3-1). The first controversial moment came on 22 minutes when Benfica were awarded a free-kick outside the box. Zahovic took a short kick to
Nuno Gomes without waiting for the whistle, the referee Isidoro Rodrigues let play continue and Gomes cracked the ball home with the UDL players caught cold. On 40, UDL were back in it, ex-Boavista striker
Márcio Santos, on as a sub, getting a head to a free kick from the right by Bilro. But seven minutes into the second half, Renato and Nuno Gomes challenged for the ball in the box, the referee signalled a foul and a
penalty and Renato saw a second yellow card. Simão converted the penalty. Reduced to ten, UDL began to struggle and on 72, Benfica confirmed their upper hand with a second from Simão
, this time from a free-kick. The teams lined up: Benfica:
Moreira, Armando, Argel, João Manuel Pinto, Ricardo Rocha; Zahovic (Ednilson), Tiago (Drulovic), Petit, Simão, Nuno Gomes, Fehér (Roger).UDL:
Costinha, Bilro, João Paulo, Renato, Edson, Leão, Paulo Gomes (Márcio Santos), João Manuel, Douala (Paulo Duarte), Silas (Alhandra), Maciel. Eduardo Marques got the only goal in Belenenses
' 1-0 home victory over Paços de Ferreira, who had beaten Sporting 4-0 a week before. The 9-minute lead lasted the whole game despite growing pressure from a confident Paços and because of a determined
display from Belenenses 'keeper Marco Aurélio. 21/09/02 Sporting's Romanian coach Laszlo Bölöni
took the curious decision of giving his squad the day off Saturday, just two days before the home game against Varzim
Monday. The game will be important to wipe out the bad impression left by the team against Paços de Ferreira (0-4) and Partizan (1-3). 17/09/02
Vitória de Guimarães went joint top of the SuperLiga with Benfica Monday by beating Vitória de Setúbal away 2-1. "It was a tough victory, but straightforward and
fair," said Guimarães coach Augusto Ignácio.Guimarães forward Romeu, ex-Porto, got two first-half goals, while Hugo Henrique
managed to pull one back for Setúbal in the second half. Romeu heads the top-scorers table with four. Benfica are top along with Guimarães, both teams having won their three games. They are followed by
FC Porto and then surprise teams Paços de Ferreira and Varzim. At the bottom, the newly-promoted threesome Nacional, Moreirense, and Académica, Nacional the only one of the
three with a point. (See Results/ Tables
) 16/09/02 FC Porto had their work cut out to overcome a resilient Gil Vicente Sunday, but the 3-1
score was just about reflective of the pressure they applied and the superior will they had to win. Gil took the lead, in fact, Nuno Amaro
cracking in a free kick that beat Porto ´keeper Nuno with its swing. Gil seemed a little bemused by the advantage and let Porto get straight back in the game, ex-Benfica midfielder Maniche
heading in a Deco cross just five minutes later. It took a foul by Luis Loureiro on Deco after 69 minutes to give FCP a breathing space, Maniche
converting the penalty. Even so, Porto were not out of trouble yet, and on 77 minutes Pedro Emanuel pulled back Duah, who was heading for goal. He saw the red card, but he had saved Porto from a possible goal conceded (nothing came of the free-kick). Minutes later, with all subs used, Jorge Costa picked up a leg injury and spent the rest of the game hobbling - FCP were on the ropes.
Gil were threatening the equaliser right until the end, but on 90 minutes, Alenitchev
touched in a cross by Paulo Ferreira, the ball hit the far post, trundled across the line, hit the near post, trundled back, was deflected by 'keeper Paulo Jorge, hit the far post again and rolled in. A freak goal to confrim FCP's overall superiority on a rainy night in Porto, with no more than 10,000 in the Antas and exactly four (4) fans in the away end to support a brave Gil.
Belenenses, who had started the season well with a draw in the Antas and a win at home to Académica, came a cropper in the Azores where Santa Clara proved much too strong for them. João Pedro
put Santa Clara two-up in the first half, Ceará made it three and Carlos Fernandes got a consolation for Belenenses near the end. Varzim beat Braga 2-0 with goals from José António
and Marcão. Varzim now have six points and are in sixth. The Madeira derby between Nacional and Marítimo ended in a 0-0 draw. On Saturday, União de Leiria had beaten
Beira-Mar 1-0 with a late goal from Kibuey. The two Vitórias, Setúbal and Guimarães, meet Monday. Guimarães can go equal top with Benfica if they win. (See SuperLiga results/ table) 15/09/02 Champions
Sporting missed the chance to equal a club record of 29 domestic games without defeat Saturday when they tumbled 0-4 at Paços de Ferreira. Sporting were sluggish and lacked aggression, and if it hadn't
been for their 'keeper Tiago, they might have left the Furniture Capital of Portugal with an even bigger kick in the pants. Even so, and as coach Bölöni said, "the result was humiliating ...but fair." Paços did
everything right, and the venom of their counter-attacks, allied with the ineffectiveness of Sporting in every department, proved a lethal combination. "There are days when everything goes right, and this was one of
them," said coach José Mota. Sporting's collapse was sown in a three minute period of the first half. On 33 minutes, Man of the Match Mauro crossed from the left for Carlos Carneiro
to rise above a static Sporting defence and head in. On 36, the roles were reversed and Carneiro crossed low from the right for Mauro
to arrive at the back post and send in a cross shot. Ten minutes into the second half, Junior threaded a ball through the Sporting defence, Beto and Quiroga stood still and Mauro
skipped happily in to lift the ball over the advancing Tiago. And the topping on the cake came on the stroke of time, Zé Nando making the line on the left and crossing low across the face of the goal for Mauro
to get his hat-trick. Earlier in the evening, Benfica had had a similarly tough time dealing with SuperLiga newcomers Moreirense. Helped by a controversial refereeing
decision, the Águias ran out 3-2 winners. Nuno Gomes
put them in front on two minutes, and it might have seemed that it was going to be an easy ride, but Moreirense came back well and took the lead with goals by Demétrios (16) and Armando (39). Then came
the controversy. On 69 minutes, Petit put Fehér through, and the Hungarian forward seemed fairly challenged by João Duarte. Referee João Ferreira
saw it differently and sent the Moreirense defender off (second yellow) and awarded a penalty to Benfica, which Simão
converted. In numerical superiority, Benfica made their on-paper superiority tell and got the winner through Fehér twelve minutes from time. Benfica remain top with a 100% record from three games, while
Moreirense are stuck at the bottom, also with a 100% record ... (See Quotes) 14/09/02 Boavista
didn't really impress at Académica Friday but came away with all three points (0-1) thanks to a goal after just 50 seconds by Brazilian striker Silva. They now have four points from three
games. Académica, despite playing well in their first three games, are yet to score a goal or win a point. (See Match Reports) 13/09/02 União de Leiria
may be given the points from their game at Marítimo, which they lost 0-2, because the registration of one of the players of the Madeiran side, the Brazilian Rincón, was allegedly irregular. UDL
were on the other end of a similar situation in the pre-season Intertoto Cup
when they lost on aggregate to Levada Maardu of Estonia because one of their players, the Cameroonian Douala, was not properly registered. (A Bola On-line) 04/09/02 Benfica
's game at newly-promoted Moreirense on September 14th will be played at Braga's Primeiro de Maio
stadium, given the large attendance expected and the fact that Moreirense's ground is still undergoing improvements for the season. Games against other teams that do not have such an enormous following as Benfica will be played at the stadium of Desportivo das Aves (capacity 10,000) (
infordesporto) The official attendance at the Boavista v FC Porto local derby Monday was 9,000, this despite the fact that the current capacity of the Bessa
stadium around 15,000. When it is completed (for EURO 2004), the capacity will be 30,000. 03/09/02 FC Porto won their bruising local derby with Boavista Monday (See Match Reports). Any football as such was rarely on show as both teams set about
hacking pieces out of each other; there were over 50 fouls in the game, the majority committed by Boavista, whose players saw five yellow cards and one red, to Porto's three yellows and a red.
Tension generated by a war of words between the presidents of both clubs in the run up to the match, plus provocative statements by FC Porto coach José Mourinho
and equally provocative action by Porto fans - they painted Boavista's emblematic black panther, which stands guard outside their new main stand, blue - didn't help to calm nerves before the game. But FCP will be happy with the points, and Boavista worried: just one point from a possible six puts them five points behind Benfica, Sporting and Vitória de Guimarães before they're hardly off the blocks.
Tempers have a chance to cool now; the next games in the SuperLiga are on the weekend of September 15th, due to many players being on international duty and Portugal playing England in a friendly next
weekend. 02/09/02 Sporting kept up with their local rivals Benfica by beating Santa Clara at Alvalade Sunday. The final score of 2-1
was an injustice to a spirited Azores side. (See Match Reports). Sporting failed
to set the 20,000 at Alvalade alight, but on the other hand the pressbox did in fact catch fire, the culprit a cigarette casually thrown away. The journalists present had to evacuate the area while the
fire brigade put out the fire. Marítimo got their first points with a deserved 2-0 victory over a disappointing União de Leiria, who have lost both of their games. Gaúcho
got the first on 11 minutes, and Jacques settled it on 51. There was also a fire in the stand at this game, and part of the stadium had to be evacuated temporarily. Ex-Benfiquista Pepa
got the goal on 52 minutes that gave Varzim the points in a 1-0 win over Moreirense, newly-promoted and so far point-less. One goal was also enough to give Vitória de Setúbal the win at
Gil Vicente, Jorginho
obliging three minutes into the second half. There was trouble in the tunnel at the end of the game when Vitória's Chipenda and Paulo Alves of Gil had a misunderstanding. The trouble spread to the terraces and the police had to intervene. (
infordesporto) The Day two programme is completed Monday with the Porto derby Boavista v FC Porto. 01/09/02 Benfica
won their second game Saturday when they travelled to Aveiro to beat Beira-Mar 2-0. Argel
got the first on nine minutes: a Simão corner was glanced on by Nuno Gomes and the Brazilian central defender was following up at the back post to head in. The second goal was in added time at the end of the game,
Simão converting a penalty afte the ball had been handled in the area. After a sound 2-2 draw at FC Porto last weekend, Belenenses went one better and got all three points from the visit of Académica
to Restelo. Neca got the first on 25 minutes, Marco Paulo the second on 94. (See Match Reports). Vitória de Guimarães
won their second game but worked hard for it, coming out 3-2 winners over plucky Nacional at the loaned Felgueiras stadium (while the Guimarães stadium is undergoing work for EURO 2004). Pedro Mendes
put Vitória in front on 17, but Adriano equalised on 33. Into the second half, Serginho put the visitors in front, but the entrance of Romeu
in the second half was crucial: he scored two, on 72 and 82, to give Vitória the result. Vitória's Rafael and Bernardo of Nacional were sent off for a tussle on 85 minutes. |
