The (Banco) BES/ A Bola Cup was formally presented in Lisbon Monday. The idea of the Cup is that when the Três Grandes (FC Porto, Benfica, Sporting) play against each other in the SuperLiga,
they will in parallel be clocking up points for the new Taça. The team that gets the most points will win the Cup, but all points won will also be translated into money for charity, the number of points being
doubled and three noughts added to give the total in euros.

Farense, threatened with relegation to the lowest levels of Portuguese football (see below) have found a loophole: if they fail to turn up for their first two scheduled games in the Segunda B
, they will be automatically relegated to the Third Division, rather than to the District Leagues, which is what would happen if they said they were not going to participate in the Segunda B.

Farense, the 'biggest' club in the Algarve, in the south of Portugal, will be without senior football for at least two years; the club will dedicate itself mainly to coaching youngsters. Farense were
relegated to the Segunda B at the end of last season because of financial problems, but needed to come up with 300,000 euros in debts to former players, who had taken them to court, to stay in the Segunda B.
The club appealed to fans to help with the sum, but all they could come up with was 815 euros (!!). Thus the decision to, in effect, close down the professional side of the club. The Algarve has only one other
currently 'viable' club, Portimonense of the Divisão de Honra, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the SuperLiga last season. The Algarve has a 30,000-seater stadium being built for EURO 2004.
