impossible for the coming season if a financial solution cannot be found. The historic club, in José Mourinho's home town, is crippled by debts, especially wages to players, which have gone unpaid for months.

Twenty-four people are to be put on trial in the so-called 'Apito Dourado' (Golden Whistle) corruption
in football scandal, including José Luís Oliveira (Vice-president of Gondomar Municipal Council) and Valentim Loureiro (ex-president of the Liga and president of Gondomar Council), both on 26 counts of active corruption, and Pinto de Sousa (former president of the Federation's Refereeing Council) on 26 counts of passive corruption, along with a dozen referees and others. The defendants are expected to appeal the decision to send the case to trial, among other things based on the "illegality" of
phone taps that are a crucial part of the evidence.
