Belenenses scored a goal in the opening and closing minutes to frustrate Marítimo in a lively 2-2 draw in Restelo. Antchouet opened, Van der Gaag and Briegel put the Madeiran side in front before half-time, but Pelé headed home from a corner in the sixth and final minute of added time (when the referee had indicated that there would be only four).

Bottom club Estrela da Amadora recorded a rare win Friday, 2-1 over theoretically much stronger opposition, Boavista. In the week of the club's elections for president, and with new coach Miguel Quaresma at the helm, Estrela looked a different team. Júlio César got them off to a flying start with a goal on six minutes, Boavista equalised on 56 through the inevitable Ricardo Sousa, but Egyptian winger Sabry gave Estrela all three points with a winner twenty minutes from time. Boavista's Filipe Anunciação was sent off in the dying minutes for a second yellow.

Benfica drew 1-1 with Marítimo in Madeira Wednesday in a game re-scheduled from Day 9. Dinda got a trademark long free-kick on 64 minutes to give the home side the lead, but after 81 Simão got his sixth of the season on the break to snatch a point for Benfica that lifts them to third in the table behind the inevitable other two Grandes, FC Porto and Sporting.

The Superliga has a two-week break now for international games and the Taça de Portugal.

Sporting went clear second in the SuperLiga Monday, seven points behind top club FC Porto, after they beat Paços de Ferreira 2-1 on their own turf. Pedro Barbosa was the hero of the night with two goals, one a drive from the edge of the box on 16 minutes after a neat back-heel by Liedson, the other a penalty on 75 after Liedson had been brought down. Zé Manuel had equalised on 51, but the sending-off of Paços' Beto on 58 weakened the home side's resistence. Paços remain in the relegation zone.

FC Porto dropped points for only the second time this season with a 1-1 away draw Sunday at Moreirense (played in Braga). Porto went in front through Benni McCarthy on 22 minutes, smashing a loose ball in at the back post, but Moreirense were on level terms six minutes later, Manoel sneaking in unmarked at the back post to head in from a corner. Porto hit the post through Derlei before the break and had several chances to take the lead in the second half but were denied by the excellent Nuno Claro in the Moreirense goal. Moreirense had their own chances to score, notably through Manoel again, through clear on goal with only Baía to beat but stroking his shot wide. And in the dying minutes, Moreirense claimed a penalty when Bruno Mestre appeared to have been brought down by Ricardo Carvalho. Porto remain eight points clear of Sporting Braga, however.

Earlier in the evening, Benfica were just too strong for Alverca and came out 3-0 winners. Midfielder Tiago proved decisive with two goals, on 12 and 81 minutes, Geovanni getting the other on 73. Benfica climb to equal third on twenty points along with Boavista and Beira-Mar, nine points behind Porto. Benfica have a game in hand on the leaders.

Surprise side Beira-Mar were within a whisker of going second, leading Vitória de Guimarães until the dying seconds. Wijnhard scored two second half goals, João Tomás equalised a quarter of an hour from the end and Guga snatched a point for Vitória in added time. Vitória remain in the relegation zone with just nine points from eleven games.

Improving Rio Ave leapfrogged over the disappointing União de Leiria in the table by beating them 3-0. Evandro got two of Rio Ave's goals, Ronny the other.

On Saturday, Sporting Braga, under Jesualdo Ferreira, who was sacked last season by Benfica, beat bottom club Estrela da Amadora 2-1 to go second. Ex-FC Porto striker Pena got the first on eight minutes, Igor got another eight minutes into the second half and Semedo made a game of it on the hour.

Boavista climbed to third with a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Nacional of Madeira. Top scorer Ricardo Sousa again proved vital with a trademark free-kick on 70 minutes. Central defender Paulo Turra extended the lead two minutes later with a header from another free-kick, while Paulo Sérgio gave Nacional a late glimmer of hopw in added time.

Early front-runners Marítimo are in free-fall. They lost Saturday 0-2 at home to Académica, for whom Delmer and Fábio Felício scored in each half. Marítimo drop to seventh.

Gil Vicente drew 0-0 with Belenenses in the first game of Day 11 of the so-called SuperLiga Friday, and the game was so very poor that that's really all there is to say about it ...

04/11/03

Sporting Braga and Boavista shot each other in the foot Monday with a 0-0 draw that helps neither club's aspirations for a European place, the most that either can hope for this season given FC Porto's clear superiority. There weren't many chances in a very competitive but relatively clean game, but Boavista's Rui Óscar had to clear off the line from Wender in the third minute, and Ricardo Sousa hit the bar with a free-kick in the second half. Either club could have risen to second in the Superliga with a win, but as it is, Sporting Braga are 5th, Boavista 7th, 10 and 11 points adrift of the top respectively.

03/11/03

In the first official game at the new Luz Stadium, Benfica came a cropper (1-2) against the surprise team of the season so far Beira-Mar, the first ever win by the team from Aveiro on Benfica's turf. Benfica had enough chances in the first half to kill the game but went in only 1-0 up through Simão, his shot deflected past the Welsh 'keeper Marriot five minutes from half-time. Sandro and Wijnhard turned the game around for Beira-Mar in the space of ten minutes in the second-half, and the visitors had the nous to hold on to the lead until the end. Beira-Mar jump above Benfica into equal second along with Sporting on 19 points, eight behind FC Porto.

Académica got their first win in the Municipal Stadium of Coimbra, 2-1 over Gil Vicente. Delmer scored twice for Os Estudantes in the second half, Paulo Alves getting a consolation penalty in the dying minutes for Gil.

Gabriel and Paulo Gomes gave União de Leiria the first-half breathing space they needed to beat Alverca 2-1 in their last game at the borrowed Marinha Grande stadium before they move to the new Municipal Stadium at Leiria. Despite a goal pegged back through Zeferino in the first minute of the second half, Alverca were unable to turn the score around.

02/11/03

Sporting dropped two home points against Rio Ave Saturday (1-1) to remain second in the SuperLiga but now at a distance of nine points from top club FC Porto, who appear to be running away with it even at this early stage. Sporting had tremendous difficulties overcoming the well-organized and combative Rio Ave who went in front in the dying seconds of the first half, Evandro popping up at the back post to finish off an excellent low cross from the left by captain Gama. A desperate Sporting finally snatched a point five minutes from time, to the relative relief of the 33,000 present, Silva getting his first of the season with a strong header from a free-kick by the otherwise out-of-form Rochemback.

Marítimo missed a chance to get nearer FC Porto when they could only draw 1-1 at Vitória de Guimarães. Vitória were in front on the half hour through Djurdjevic with a shot from about the penalty spot, but Alan gave Marítimo a point on 48 minutes, taking advantage of a bad clearance by Vitória ´keeper Palatsi.

Paços de Ferreira got their first three points following the return of coach José Mota on their visit to soft-touch Estrela da Amadora (0-1), firmly planted at the bottom with just four points from ten games. Renato Queirós got the only goal of the game on 34 minutes. There were white handkerchiefs from the Estrela fans at the end of the game, and coach João Alves' job must now be hanging by a thread.

01/11/03

FC Porto opened Day 10 of the SuperLiga with a 1-0 win over difficult but unadventurous Nacional of Madeira. It was Porto's ninth win - the team have dropped only two points, those in the second game of the season, a 1-1 draw at now-struggling Estrela da Amadora. Porto were without influential midfielder Deco, suspended for being sent off against Boavista earlier in the week. (He may be suspended for a long time after being accused at throwing a boot at the referee on the night.) Porto missed his ideas Friday, and it took a corner and a header from central defender Ricardo Carvalho on 53 minutes to break the deadlock.
