Claques are the fan groups, the ultras, who are the most vociferous members of the crowd at Portuguese games. They’re the ones with the flags and banners and, if they can smuggle them in past security, flares and bangers. The leaders often spend the game with their backs to the pitch, conducting the chanting, sometimes with megaphones. The claques are often subsidised by the clubs (match tickets, coaches), and they may have spaces set aside for them at the stadium for administrative and social purposes, and to store their materials. Some clubs have more than one claque.
