André Villas Boas, erstwhile assistant to José Mourinho but last season coach at Académica, who finished 11th, has been appointed coach at FC Porto, replacing veteran Jesualdo Ferreira. He was officially presented at the club on Friday; his contract is for two seasons. He will be replaced at Académica by Jorge Costa, who leaves Olhanense.

Sporting have agreed to pay Vitória de Guimarães compensation of 600,000 euros to take coach Paulo Sérgio to Alvalade for the next two seasons, taking over from Carlos Carvalhal, who leaves at the end of this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo has denied that he held a party (for team-mate Drenthe) at his house until five in the morning on the eve of the recent Real Madrid v Barcelona match, which Real Madrid lost. Sporting Braga's key midfielder/forward Mossoró was released from hospital on Tuesday. He broke a leg in a challenge with Carlos Martins during the Benfica v Braga Liga match on Saturday and is expected to be out of action for at least six months.

The Portuguese Football Federation's (FPF) Council of Justice has responded to FC Porto's appeal against the suspension of players Hulk and Sapunaru, handed down by the Liga's Disciplinary Committee, by reducing their punishment. The players were suspended for four and six months, respectively, for assaulting stewards in the tunnel after the Benfica v Porto league game on 20 December of last year (14th jornada). The suspension has been altered to three and four games, respectively. Hulk has played only a couple of Champions League games since December, while Sapunaru was loaned to Rapid Bucharest in the transfer window. Porto are now expected to claim compensation from the Liga for the damage caused by the suspensions.
Sporting Braga, who had appealed against the suspension of three months of captain Vandinho following incidents at the mouth of the tunnel in the Braga v Benfica game earlier in the season, had their appeal rejected.

Benfica made a loss during the first six months of the season of 13.8 million euros. Director Domingos Soares Oliveira said that the loss was "as planned". He also revealed that the club has consolidated liabilities of 340 million euros.

Sapunaru has since been loaned to Rapid Bucharest. Hulk will miss all but the last three league games, one of which is at home to Benfica. He is still able to play in Porto's Champions League games, and was first choice in last week's game against Arsenal.

Benfica's Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia has been suspended for two games on the basis of the TV images of a foul on Guimarães' central defender Valdomiro on Saturday. The incident was not seen by the referee; if he had seen it, it would have meant a red card for Garcia and a penalty for Vitória.
