André Villas Boas, erstwhile assistant to José Mourinho but last season coach at Académica, who finished 11th, has been appointed coach at FC Porto, replacing veteran Jesualdo Ferreira. He was officially presented at the club on Friday; his contract is for two seasons. He will be replaced at Académica by Jorge Costa, who leaves Olhanense.

FC Porto midfielder Rúben Micael broke a bone in his foot in training on Tuesday and underwent an operation on Wednesday. He will be out for eight to ten weeks and any hopes he had of being picked for the Portugal squad for South Africa have disappeared.

Sporting have agreed to pay Vitória de Guimarães compensation of 600,000 euros to take coach Paulo Sérgio to Alvalade for the next two seasons, taking over from Carlos Carvalhal, who leaves at the end of this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo has denied that he held a party (for team-mate Drenthe) at his house until five in the morning on the eve of the recent Real Madrid v Barcelona match, which Real Madrid lost. Ronaldo has asked his lawyers to take legal action against those responsible for the allegations, on Spanish channel Telecinco.

Portuguese coach Jaime Pacheco has been sacked from Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab after they lost at Fooland (1-0) in the Asian champions League. Pacheco has won a Price's Cup for the club since he moved there last summer after being sacked by Belenenses.

Sporting Braga's key midfielder/forward Mossoró was released from hospital on Tuesday. He broke a leg in a challenge with Carlos Martins during the Benfica v Braga Liga match on Saturday and is expected to be out of action for at least six months.

The Portuguese Football Federation's (FPF) Council of Justice has responded to FC Porto's appeal against the suspension of players Hulk and Sapunaru, handed down by the Liga's Disciplinary Committee, by reducing their punishment. The players were suspended for four and six months, respectively, for assaulting stewards in the tunnel after the Benfica v Porto league game on 20 December of last year (14th jornada). The suspension has been altered to three and four games, respectively. Hulk has played only a couple of Champions League games since December, while Sapunaru was loaned to Rapid Bucharest in the transfer window. Porto are now expected to claim compensation from the Liga for the damage caused by the suspensions.

Sporting Braga, who had appealed against the suspension of three months of captain Vandinho following incidents at the mouth of the tunnel in the Braga v Benfica game earlier in the season, had their appeal rejected.

Liga President Hermínio Loureiro has resigned in the wake of the decision by the FPF.

FC Porto's Portuguese international winger Silvestre Varela will be out for the rest of the season after breaking his left fibula and dislocating his ankle in training. He will miss the World Cup.

Belenenses' Argentinian defender Diego Navarro has been suspended for a year after confirmation that he failed a drugs test at the beginning of the season. He was on loan to Sporting Covilhã.

Benfica made a loss during the first six months of the season of 13.8 million euros. Director Domingos Soares Oliveira said that the loss was "as planned". He also revealed that the club has consolidated liabilities of 340 million euros.

Sporting made a loss of 7.8 million euros in the first half of the season, partly justified by the club as being due to the failure of the team to qualify for the Champions League group phase; they were knocked out by Fiorentina in the last qualifying round.

Former FC Porto midfielder Costinha has been named as Sporting's Director of Football, replacing Ricardo Sá Pinto, sacked after he was involved in a fight with Liedson in the changing room. Costinha has recently hung up his chuteiras after a spell with Atalanta in Italy.

FC Porto players Hulk and Sapunaru were handed suspensions of four and six months, respectively, on Thursday for their part in scuffles in the tunnel following the Benfica v FC Porto league game in December. Sapunaru has since been loaned to Rapid Bucharest. Hulk will miss all but the last three league games, one of which is at home to Benfica. He is still able to play in Porto's Champions League games, and was first choice in last week's game against Arsenal.

Nacional's winter signing, the Serbian midfielder Todorovic, broke his leg in training on Wedensday and will be out of action for at least two months.

Atlético Valdevez of the Second Division North (third tier) have been disqualified from the competition after failing to turn up at two consecutive games.

Influential Sporting Braga captain Vandinho has been suspended for three months following incidents after the home game against Benfica on 31 October last year. And arguably the team's best player at the moment, the Brazilian midfielder Mossoró, has been suspended for three games for the same reason.

Benfica's Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia has been suspended for two games on the basis of the TV images of a foul on Guimarães' central defender Valdomiro on Saturday. The incident was not seen by the referee; if he had seen it, it would have meant a red card for Garcia and a penalty for Vitória.

Former Boavista, Guimarães and Belenenses coach Jaime Pacheco, now with Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabad, won the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Cup on Thursday, beating Al Hilal, coached by Eric Gerets, 2-1 in the Final.

Naval's French forward Outtara has been suspended by the club after a training incident with coach Augusto Ignácio.
