taça da liga - 2008/09

In a controversial game, Benfica beat Sporting on penalties to take the second edition of the Taça da Liga on Saturday.

It was an even but bad-tempered first half peppered with many fouls. Both sides had good chances to score: on four minutes, Aimar put Nuno Gomes through but Tiago was out quickly to save with his legs, and on 16, David Luíz cleared off the line after Quim had charged out and left Liedson with a sight of goal.

Three minutes into the second half, Vukcevic combined with Caneira on the left, and the full back's cross was poked against the post by Liedson, only for Pereirinha to follow up and net at the back post, giving Sporting the lead. Miguel Vítor headed against the bar on 67 minutes but on 73 came the incident that left Sporting incensed: Di Maria, on as sub, attempted to put the ball past Pedro Silva on the left of the box and the ball hit the defender's chest. The referee Lucílio Baptista saw a hand-ball and gave a penalty, sending off Pedro Silva for a second yellow. Reyes converted the resulting spot kick. Reduced to ten men, Sporting were left to cling on to the draw and wait for penalties, but luck was not their lady on the night. It went to ten kicks, and the tenth was converted by Carlos Martins against his old club, giving Benfica what is likely to be their only trophy this season.
