taça da liga - 2007/08

Vitória de Setúbal became the first winners of the Taça da Liga Saturday, beating Sporting on penalties in the final in front of a virtually full-house Algarve Stadium. Neither side took many risks during the 90 minutes, but Vitória came clsest to scoring, Claudio Pitbull hitting a post from a curling free-kick. Without extra time, the game went straight to penalties, and Vitória's hero was found: goalkeeper Eduardo. Auri, Cláudio Pitbull and Elias scored for Vitória, while Jorginho and Paulinho allowed saves from Rui Pastrício. Sporting, notoriously inept from the spot this season, scored through Romagnoli and João Moutinho, but Eduardo saved from Polga, Liedson and Izmailov..

The teams lined up:

Vitória de Setúbal: Eduardo, Janício, Robson, Auri, Jorginho, Sandro, Elias, Ricardo Chaves, Leandro Branco (Filipe Gonçalves 79), Pitbull, Bruno Gama (Paulinho 68)

Sporting moved into the final of the Taça da Liga Wednesday, beating Penafiel of the Liga de Honra 3-1 in front of just 7,500 at Alvalade. Romagnoli put them in front on 21 minutes and they virtually wrapped it up seven minutes later through Izmailov. Penafiel pulled one back, however, Guedes scoring on 67 minutes, but Izmailov got his second five minutes from time.

The teams lined up:

Sporting: Rui Patrício, Pereirinha, Gladstone, Tonel, Ronny (Farnerud 84), Miguel Veloso, Izmailov, João Moutinho, Romagnoli (Adrien Silva 66), Vukcevic (Celsinho 46), Purovic

The Final will be in the Estádio do Algarve on 22 March.

Sporting regained some confidence ahead of the weekend's clássico against FC Porto by beating Liga de Honra side Beira-Mar 3-0 in the Taça da Liga Wednesday. Beira-Mar went to Alvalade prepared to defend and they kept the sheet clean until the 68th minute, Liedson making space for himself outside the area and placing a fine cross-shot past Luíz Almeida for a rare goal this season. Beira-Mar had no response and went further behind five minutes later, Vukcevic's snap shot going under Almeida's body. The Montenegran swivelled to blast home his second, Sporting's third, ten minutes from time.

The teams lined up:

Sporting: Rui Patrício, Pereirinha, Polga (Gladstone 85), Tonel, Ronny, Miguel Veloso (Izmailov 65), João Moutinho, Romagnoli (Celsinho 78), Vukcevic, Liedson, Purovic.

Beira-Mar: Luiz Almeida, Ricardo, Fernando, Buba, Diogo Luís, Pedro Santos (Artur 62), Fahel (Hernâni 76), Vasco Matos (Roma 86), Maurinho, João Pedro, Gyano.

In the other Taça game,
Vitória de Setúbal drew 1-1 at Penafiel. Brazilian forward Matheus, playing in his last game for Vitória before returning to Sporting Braga, cracked a loose ball home on 17 minutes, but on 43, Guedes scored from the spot (in fact, following two saves by Eduardo after the spot kick); Robson was sent off for fouling Nélson for the penalty.

The teams lined up:

Penafiel: Palatsi, João Pedro (Danny 84), Nélson Campos (Bacari 74), Franco, Pedro Araújo, Kelly Berville, Lourenço, Ferreira, Bakero, Guedes, Dias.

Vitória de Setúbal: Eduardo, Janicio, Auri, Robson, Jorginho, Elias (Hugo 46), Sandro, Ricardo Chaves (Bruno Ribeiro 46), Felipe, Pitbull, Matheus.

Sporting's recent woes continued Wednesday with a poor display and 0-1 Taça da Liga defeat to impressive Vitória de Setúbal in front 6,000 plus José Mourinho at Vitória's Bonfim stadium. Vitória were sharper in all departments and could have won by a wider margin but for Stojkovic, making a rare appearance between the sticks for Sporting. He could do nothing on the half hour, though, as Claudio Pitbull's cross from deep on the right was met by Filipe Gonçalves' delightful glancing header. It was enough to put Vitória top of the four-team League.

The teams lined up:

Vitória de Setúbal: Eduardo, Janício, Robson, Auri, Adalto, Sandro, Ricardo Chaves, Filipe Gonçalves (Leandro 75), Elias, Claudio Pitbull (Jorginho 81), Matheus (Edinho 65).

Sporting: Stojkovic, Abel, Tonel, Polga, Had, Pereirinha (Romagnoli 36), Izmailov (Miguel Veloso 45), Vukcevic, João Moutinho, Liedson, Purovic (Luis Paez 42)

In the other game in the mini-league,
Beira-Mar and Penafiel, both of the Liga de Honra (second tier) drew 1-1 on an atrocious pitch in Aveiro in front of just 300 souls. For the record, Vitinha put Beira-Mar in front on 20 minutes, with Bakero equalising just before the break.

The teams lined up:

Beira-Mar: Luiz Almeida, Primo (João Pedro 55), Ricardo, Fernando, Camora, Fahel, Jorge Vidigal, Artur, Vasco Matos (Dedé 82), Mateus, Vitinha (Wegno 68)

Penafiel: Palatsi, João Pedro, Franco (Ferreira 68), Kelly, Pedro Araújo, Hélder Sousa, Lourenço, Rui Sampaio, Dias, Diego Mourão, Bakero

After drawing the first leg 1-1 at the Luz, a second-string Benfica were knocked out of the Taça da Liga by Vitória de Setúbal Wednesday, going down 1-2. They went in front with a Freddy Adu penalty in added time in the first half, but Matheus and Edinho turned the score round for Vitória, who have not lost now in 12 games.

The teams lined up:

Vitória de Setúbal: Eduardo, Janício, Robson, Auri, Adalto, Sandro, Elias, Ricardo Chaves, Paulinho (Edinho 46), Pitbull (Filipe Gonçalves 88), Matheus (Bruno Gama 82).

Benfica: Butt, Luís Filipe, Luisão, Zoro, Miguelito, Binya, Edcarlos, Cristiano Rodriguez (Andrés Diaz 65), Di Maria (Fábio Coentrão 71), Bergessio, Freddy Adu (Yu Dabao 85).

Sporting got past Liga de Honra side Fátima, but it was a hard slog. They had lost 1-2 at home and went further behind on 15 minutes, Saleiro netting. Liedson pulled one back for Sporting on 35 minutes, but then Falardo extended Fátima's aggrregate lead on 49. It was left to Purovic on 64 and Liedson with his second on 83, capitlaising on an awful mix up in the Fátima defence, to take Sporting into the last four..

The teams lined up:

CD Fátima: Pedro Duarte, Marco Airosa, Jorge Teixeira (Moreira 90), Veríssimo, Duarte Machado, João Fonseca, Joel (Ricardo Jorge 86), Falardo, Cícero, Marinho, Saleiro.

Sporting: Stojkovic, Abel, Tonel, Anderson Polga, Ronny (Pereirinha 53), Miguel Veloso, João Moutinho, Vukcevic (Izmailov 64), Romagnoli, Yannick (Purovic 53), Liedson.

Penafiel of the Liga de Honra knocked out top tier side União de Leiria. Reversing a 1-3 defeat from the first leg was always going to be difficult for União, and in fact it was only in added time at the end of the game that they managed a goal, João Paulo scoring from the spot.

The teams linbed up:

União de Leiria: Fernando, Éder Bonfim, Hugo Costa, Éder Gaúcho, Patrick (Faria 73), Tiago, Cadú, Toñito (Paulo César 73), Sougou, João Paulo, Maciel.

Penafiel: Palatsi, Celso, João Pedro, Kelly, Pedro Araújo, Hélder Sousa, Lourenço, Ferreira, Dias (Nélson Campos 46), Bakero (Zequinha 86), Guedes (Rui Sampaio 88).

In a tie between two Liga de Honra sides, Beira-Mar reversed a 0-1 deficit from the first leg against Algarve side Portimonense, but not before being surprised by Maxi Bevacqua after just six minutes. That put Portimonense 2-0 up, but second-half goals from Jessé, Vitinha and Roma put Beira-Mar through. Beira-Mar 'keeper Luís Almeida saw a direct red just before the break, Portimonense's Carlitos a second yellow just after it.

The teams lined up:

Beira-Mar: Luís Almeida, Vidigal (Vasco Matos 62), Fernando, Ricardo, Diogo Luís, Emerson (Litos 41), Artur, Ratinho, Vitinha (Roma 76), João Pedro, Jessé.

Portimonense: Michael, Ricardo Pessoa, Wellington, Nuno Coelho, Carlitos, Rui Ferreira (Diogo 71), Nuno André, Tarantini, Paulo Sérgio (Pimenta 63), Raphael Freitas (Miguel Ângelo 51), Maxi Bevacqua.

Still to win in the Liga de Honra, Penafiel are doing wonders in the Taça da Liga. they have already beaten Marítimo and Nacional, and now they go into the second leg of the quarter final against União de Leiria with a 3-1 lead. Central defender João Pedro put them in front after just two minutes, with Bakero adding goals on 68 and 79 minutes. Sougou pulled one back in added time ... but will it be enough to turn around the tie, to be decided in the second leg on 31 October?

In the other quarter final, Portimonense beat fellow Liga de Honra club Beira-Mar 1-0, sub Diogo heading in on 71 minutes.

The Taça da Liga is into the last-eight phase, and the Lisbon giants Sporting and Benfica, fielding a lot of second string players, may find it hard to get into the last four.

Sporting went down 1-2 at 'home' (in fact Belenenses' Estádio do Restelo, borrowed while Alvalade gets a new pitch) to Liga de Honra side Fátima, who had knocked FC Porto out in the previous round. Cícero put Fátima in front from the spot after a quarter of an hour, Liedson equalised on 53 minutes but Falardo gave the visitors a surprising lead on 82.

The teams lined up:

Sporting: Tiago, Abel, Tonel, Gladstone (Miguel Veloso 46), Marian Had, Farnerud (João Moutinho 46), Paredes, Celsinho (Romagnoli 46), Izmailov, Purovic, Liedson.

Fátima: Pedro Duarte, Marco Airosa (Bispo 68), Veríssimo, Jorge Teixeira, Duarte Machado, Miguel Xavier, Joel, João Fonseca, Cícero (Saleiro 79), Ricardo Jorge (Falardo 64), Marinho.

Benfica also had trouble at home, but they perhaps have more of an excuse: they were playing Vitória de Setúbal, looking good under Carlos Carvalhal. Matheus gave Vitória the lead as early as the 11th minute from what looked like an offside position, and it seemed it would be enough to give them the win until deep into added time when American international Freddy Adu found space on the left and placed a cross-shot past Eduardo's left hand.

The teams lined up:

Benfica: Quim, Luís Filipe, Luisão, Zoro, Miguelito, Katsouranis, Binya, Nuno Assis, Di Maria (Adu 71), Fábio Coentrão (Yu Dabao 46), Bergessio (Mantorras 71)

Vitória de Setúbal: Eduardo, Janício, Robson, Auri (Hugo 46), Adalto, Sandro, Elias, Ricardo Chaves, Leandro Branco, Paulo Roberto (Edinho 72), Matheus (Bruno Gama 57)

The quarter-finals are played over two legs; the second legs of these games will be on 31 October.

Friday's draw dictated that Sporting receive Fátima, who knocked out FC Porto in the previous round, in the fourth round of the Carlsberg Cup (Taça da Liga).

All the ties:

Benfica-V. Setúbal
Portimonense-Beira Mar
Penafiel-U. Leiria

The ties will be decided over two legs (20/21 October and 31 October), the four winners going into a round-robin from which two will go to the Final, to be played at a neutral stadium.

The third round of the Taça da Liga saw a miracle in Fátima, where the local team put out Portuguese champions FC Porto 4-2 on penalties. Fátima, from the Liga de Honra, never looked inferior to Porto, much changed from the last Liga line-up. The game was goal-less for 120 minutes until those miraculous penalties.

The teams lined up:

Fátima: Pedro Duarte, Marco Airosa, Duarte Machado, Veríssimo, Jorge Teixeira, João Fonseca, Falardo (Moreira 83), Cícero (Miguel Xavier 63), Joel, Saleiro, Marinho.

Sporting beat Vitória de Guimarães 7-6 on penalties, the game also having finished 0-0 after extra time. Sporting's hero was goalkeeper Tiago, who saved two penalties and scored one.

The teams lined up:

Vitória de Guimarães: Nilson, Andrezinho, Sereno, Geromel, Luciano, Flávio Meireles (Ghilas 59), João Alves, Fajardo, Desmarets, Alan Rabiola 75), Miljan (Targino 63).

Sporting: Tiago, Pereirinha (Abel 60), Tonel, Anderson Polga, Miguel Veloso, Carlos Paredes, João Moutinho, Romagnoli, Izmailov (Purovic 69), Vuckevic (Ronny 73), Yannick Djaló.

Benfica were lucky to go through. They were 0-1 down after 35 minutes at Estrela da Amadora, a trademark free-kick from way out by central defender Maurício, but at the curtain, the referee invented a penalty for supposed hand ball in favour of Benfica, and Freddy Adu made no mistake from the spot. The score remained the same after extra time, and Benfica came out winners 5-4 on penalties.

The teams lined up:

Estrela da Amadora: Pedro Alves, Rui Duarte (Wagnão 88), Maurício, Hugo Carreira, Cardoso, Luís Aguiar (Mateus 65), Fernando, Tiago Gomes, Yoni, Moses, Nuno Viveiros (Pedro Pereira 78).

Benfica: Butt, Nélson, Luisão, Zoro, Miguelito, Maxi Pereira (Freddy Adu 46), Binya, Nuno Assis (Andrés Diaz 74), Di Maria (Fábio Coentrão 62), Dabao, Cristian Rodriguez.

Goals late in the game from
Matheus and Leandro gave Vitória de Setúbal a 2-0 win over Sporting Braga.

Goals from Maciel on 15 minutes and Jessuí (a penalty) on 75 gave União de Leiria a 2-0 win at Leixões.

Portimonense (Liga de Honra) put Belenenses out on penalties (4-3). In normal time, Fernando had put Belenenses in front on 66 minutes, but Paulo Sérgio equalised on 83.

Beira-Mar (Liga de Honra) put out Paços de Ferreira on penalties (4-3) after the game had finished 0-0.

Penafiel (Liga de Honra) eliminated Nacional with a goal from Guedes on 22 minutes.

Beira-Mar of the Liga de Honra (relegated to the 2nd tier last season) removed Liga side Boavista from the Taça da Liga Sunday, Roma scoring the only goal on 82 minutes, a low drive from outside the area that beat Carlos' right hand. Boavista midfielder Diakité, returning to Aveiro after his transfer to Boavista, was sent off with a direct red early in the second half.

The teams lined up:

Beira Mar: Luís Almeida, Vidigal, Fernando, Ricardo, Camora, Emerson (João Pedro 59), Tony (Ratinho 45), Maurinho, Vasco Matos (Roma 68), Vitinha, Mateus.

Boavista: Carlos, Gilberto Silva, Ricardo Silva, Marcelão, Mário Silva, Diakité, Fleurival, Laionel (Edgar 86), Grezelak, Linz (Ivan 63), Fary (Essame 51).

There were other shocks: Fátima, newly promoted to the Liga de Honra, beat Académica 1-0 with a goal from Ricardo Jorge on the half hour; Portimonense beat Naval on penalties after the game had finished at 0-0; Penafiel are through after beating Marítimo on penalties, the final score also 0-0.

Results from the Second Round:

Estoril-Estrela da Amadora, 0-1
Penafiel-Marítimo, 0-0 (5-4 pens)

Fátima-Académica, 1-0
