FC Porto added the Taça de Portugal to their booty this season with a 1-0 win over União de Leiria in the final. Derlei scored the winner after 63 minutes following a typical run by Deco down the right and a cut back for the Ninja to steam in and whack the ball past Helton at the near post. Just before that, though, UDL had had a penalty appeal turned down when Ricardo Carvalho brought down Maciel as he broke into the area. A minute after that, Deco also claimed a penalty when he fell in the area, but he did fall and wasn't fouled. In added time, UDL's forward Silas cracked an immense drive from the edge of the box against Vítor Baía's bar. It was their last, desperate gasp.

The teams lined up:

FC Porto: Vítor Baía, Paulo Ferreira, Jorge Costa, Ricardo Carvalho, Ricardo Costa, Tiago (Mário Silva, 85m), Maniche, Deco, Alenichev, Derlei (Jankauskas, 85m), Hélder Postiga (Capucho, 67m).

União de Leiria: Helton, Bilro, Gabriel, Paulo Gomes, Renato, Edson (Alhandra, 75m), Fernando Aguiar (Márcio Santos, 71m), João Manuel, Leão (Douala, 64m), Silas, Maciel.

FC Porto thus win the pleno ('full house'): Portuguese title, UEFA Cup and now the Portuguese Cup. This is the first time it has been done in the history of Portuguese football.

04/06/03

FC Porto have sold out their 11,000 ticket allocation for the final of the Taça on June 15th.

28/05/03

The Final of the Taça will after all be televised. There were doubts because the television companies wer enot offering enough money to the FPF, but the fourth channel TVI has offered something in the region of 300,000 euros for the rights, and will cede these to State channel RTP for transmission abroad.

06/05/03

The Leiria City Council are to lay on 73 coaches to take União fans to the final of the Taça de Portugal against FC Porto on June 15th.

16/04/03

União de Leiria have asked for the final of the Taça to be brought forward to give both finalists (UDL and FC Porto) a longer summer break. Their case is helped by the fact that the Portuguese National Team have had their early summer tour of the far-east cancelled because of the outbreak of the SARS virus there.

15/04/03

FC Porto joined União de Leiria in the Final of the Taça de Portugal Monday after beating Naval (Segunda Divisão) 2-0. Naval held the mighty FCP for a whole half, but with the entrance of Deco at half time, the soon-to-be champions, and possible winners of the UEFA Cup, began to dominate and Derlei broke the stalemate on 55 minutes. Ten minutes from time it was Deco himself who killed the game with FCP's 100th official goal of the season. The final will be on June 15th at the National stadium, Lisbon. With FCP qualifying, União de Leiria are now virtually assured of a UEFA cup place next season.

13/04/03

União de Leiria became the first finalists of this year's Taça when they beat Paços de Ferreira 1-0 Sunday. The winning goal came in added time from veteran Bilro . The prize is not only a place in the final; if as seems likely FC Porto beat Segunda side Naval Monday in the other semi-final, then União de Leiria will qualify for the UEFA Cup whether they win the Taça or not, as Porto seem sure to win the league title and will qualify for the Champions League.

Neither of the Taça de Portugal semi-finals will be televised. The FPF have said that offers from the TV companies have not been up to expectations. FPF pressident Gilberto Madaíl has promised that the final will be televised, however.

26/03/03

The draw was made Tuesday for the Semi-finals of the Taça. FC Porto should make it past Segunda side Naval at home, while Paços de Ferreira have to travel to União de Leiria . The games are set for April 14th and 13th respectively.

09/03/03

Segunda side Naval provided the shock of the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal when they travelled to Alvalade and beat Sporting 1-0 in a thriller Sunday. Costé got Naval's goal on the hour, getting a second bite at a cross from Sérgio Gameiro after Tiago had saved his first attempt. GoalkeeperDani kept the side from Figueira da Foz in the game in the second half, and Naval might have extended their lead with a couple of vicious counter-attacks. While Naval went over to their three thousand travelling fans at the end, the rest of the stadium booed the Sporting team off, and there were many white handkerchiefs being waved also, a sign that coach Laszlo Bölöni's days are surely numbered.

In the other Sunday quarter-final, Paços de Ferreira went through with a 2-1 home win over Vitória de Setúbal. Paços were in front very early on, in-form Renato Queiroz taking a long pass from Zé Nando and beating Pedro Espinha. On the half-hour, Hugo Henrique was fouled in the box and got up to score the equaliser from the spot. Just before the break, Renato Queiroz had a hand in the second for Paços ... and so, apparently, did Serginho, but the ref didn't see the handball and the Brazilian striker went on to score the goal that effectively put his side through to the semis for the firt time in the history of the club. Vitória's resistance in the second half was dimished when they were down to ten for the last forty minutes with the expulsion of Rui Lima for a second yellow, and down to nine in the dying minutes when Rui Miguel said something to the ref.

On Saturday, FC Porto once again proved that they are an aircraft-carrier of a side when they simply annihalated SuperLiga colleagues Varzim by a whopping 7-0. Varzim have been wobbling a bit of late after a bright start to the season, but there was no way of predicting that they would be so outclassed by what was essentially FC Porto's second string. Marco Ferreira got a hat-trick, Jankauskas, César Peixoto and Clayton got one each and goalkeeper Nuno piled on the humiliation with a penalty on the stroke of time.

União de Leiria are the other team in the semis. They beat Académica 3-1 Saturday with goals by Hugo Almeida, Paulo Gomes and Bilro. Marinescu replied for Os Estudantes.

The Semi-finals will be played on April 13th, with the Final on June 15th at the National Stadium. A date has not yet been set for the draw for the semis.

08/03/03

The quarter final pairings are finally clear after Vitória de Setúbal beat Segunda side Sporting Covilhã 3-0 Wednesday (See çTaa draw) . Hugo Henrique scored two in the first half, the second from the penalty spot, and Rui Miguel finished it off ten minutes from time. The quarter finals are to be played this weekend.

27/02/03

Vitória de Setúbal smashed Third Division Joane 6-1 Wednesday in new coach Diamantino Miranda's first game in charge. Mário Carlos, Jorginho and Hugo Alcântara in the first half, and Hugo Henrique and Pascal (two) in the second did the damage. Flávio got scant consolation for Joane in the dying moments. Vitóra go on to meet Segunda side Sporting Covilhã in a delayed sixth round tie, and the winners of that game will go on the play at Paços de Ferreira in the quarter-finals.

Through to play FC Porto away in the quarter-finals are SuperLiga side Varzim, who beat Segunda side Felgueiras 2-0 at home. Paulo Vida and João Paulo got the goals.

13/02/03

Cash-strapped Felgueiras of the Segunda beat SuperLiga side Moreirense 1-0 in the fifth round of the Taça Wednesday, the only goal coming from Zezé on a counter attack in added time. Felgueiras go on to meet Varzim in the sixth round, and the winner of that game will meet the mighty FC Porto in the quarter finals.

30/01/03

FC Porto and Sporting are through to the quarter finals of the Taça de Portugal after they beat Vitória de Guimarães and Estrela da Amadora respectively.

FC Porto trailed to Vitória for fifty-five minutes, a goal from former FCP forward Romeu on 12 minutes giving the home side hope. But on 68, captain Jorge Costa converted a free-kick from César Peixoto, and just five minutes later, full-back Nuno Valente decided it.

Sporting travelled across town to Estrela da Amadora, currently riding high in the Segunda, and decided the tie with a typical Jardel headed goal early in the second half.

SuperLiga strugglers Académica have found a new lease of life under new coach Artur Jorge and supplemented an improvement in their league position with a win over Segunda club Chaves that takes them into the last eight. Fredy (2) and captain Dário put the game beyond the reach of Chaves before Isidro got a consolation on the stroke of time.

Naval of Figueira da Foz took Sporting Espinho into extra time in their tie. Then Baha put Naval in front before Miguel Vaz equalised. Naval took it on penalties, 4-2.

23/01/03

União de Leiria had no difficulty in seeing off Segunda B side Freamunde Wednesday and advancing to the quarter final stage. The score was kept respectable in the first half, UDL managing just the one through Douala, but in the second half they stepped up a gear and reached a scoreline of 4-1, Márcio Santos (2) and Kibuey netting for UDL, Mendes for Freamunde. In the last five minutes, Brandão reduced the margin for the minnows, but Maciel restored it again to leave the final score at 5-2.

UDL join Paços de Ferreira in the last eight. Paços had a bye through.

16/01/03

FC Porto knocked Gil Vicente out of the Cup Wednesday (2-1) and go through to play at Vitória de Guimarães in the last 16. Clayton and Maniche gave Porto breathing space in the first half, and Gil left it until ten minutes from time to pull one back through Nunes.

Paços de Ferreira removed Gondomar, who had knocked out Benfica in the previous round, but they left it until two minutes from time with a goal from Renato Queiróz . Paços have a bye into the quarter-finals.

07/11/02

The fourth round draw of the Taça threw up easy ties for the Três Grandes: Benfica are at home to Gondomar, Sporting at home to Estarreja and FC Porto at home to Trofense. Boavista have it harder with an away trip to Azores side Santa Clara, while high-flying Vitória de Guimarães play host to high-flying (in the Segunda) Alverca. Madeiran SuperLiga rivals Nacional and Marítimo also meet. (See Draw)

01/11/02

There are still no viable takers for the transmission of Taça and Supertaça games for this season and next. The invitation for offers ended Thursday and the FPF received three: BPN (a bank), Olivedesportos (a media company) and SportTv (a cable TV channel). None of the offers met with the FPF's satisfaction. The next step will be to negotiate individually with the three parties, or to negotiate each round/game rather than a package.

31/10/02

In the game of the round, Marco beat fellow Segunda high-flyers Salgueiros 2-0 Wednesday to go through to the fourth round of the Taça de Portugal. Rui Gomes on 38 and Hélder Quental on 65 got the goals.

The game between Lusitano of the Algarve and Felgueiras was postponed because the staff at the Municipal Stadium in Vila Real de Santo António were on a striked convened by the national union CGTP .

24/10/02

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have had to open up again the offer of broadacsting rights for Cup and Supercup games. These rights were offered as a single package at the beginning of the month, but there were no takers. The various elements will now be offered separately, including 22 Cup matches as from the fourth round for the next two seasons, the respective SuperCup finals (the winners of the SuperLiga versus the winners of the Cup) and static advertising.

15/10/02

The draw was made Monday for the çThird Round of the Taa, in which Segunda clubs are now involved.

12/10/02

No Portuguese TV channel has shown any interest in the rights to broadcast the Taça de Portugal and the Supertaça Cândido Oliveira over the next two years. The deadline ended Friday and the Football Federation had to admit that they need to re-think the process. A spokesperson blamed the troubled domestic economy for the lack of interest.

09/10/02

Last year's beaten finalists Leixões, of the Segunda B, were knocked out of the Taça at the second hurdle Tuesday, going down 3-0 at Paredes, also of the Segunda B. This setback comes after a brief but glorious showing by the northeners from Matosinhos in the UEFA Cup, which they also exited last week.

12/09/02

The FPF is to put the TV rights to this season's Taça de Portugal out to tender next week. The channels that will bid for it are state channel RTP1, independent channels SIC and TVI and cable channel SportTV.
