Third Round

Cup-holders Benfica and their Lisbon neighbours Sporting are through to the fourth round of the Taça de Portugal.

Sporting put FC Porto out 3-1 at the Dragão. The visitors were always the better of the two teams, especially in midfield where they were quicker to the ball and more aggressive than their counterparts and misplaced far fewer passes.

Sporting took the lead on 32 minutes, Jonathan making the line and crossing from the left only for Marcano to crash an unstoppable header into his own goal. Three minutes later, Porto were level: Colombian midfielder Juan Quintero threaded a beautiful through pass to compatriot Jackson Martínez and he strode on to neatly chip the ball over the oncoming Rui Patrício. But Sporting got their noses in front again on 39 minutes, Nani cracking in a shot from the edge of the area.

Early in the second half, Porto had the chance to draw level again after Jackson was fouled by Maurício in the box. The Porto captain got up and brushed himself off to take the spot kick. He tried to execute a paradinha but ended up merely telegraphing his intentions and Rui Patrício got down to save it. The miss seemed to shake Porto and they never found themselves again. Sporting made sure of the win on 83 minutes when Slimani, on as sub, crossed for another sub, Carrillo, to tap in from close range.

A deliberately depleted Benfica had a tough slog in the Serra to beat Segunda Liga side Sporting da Covilhã. Jonas started the ball rolling for Benfica on two minutes: Tiago Moreira brought down Derley and the Brazilian international scored from the spot. Civilhã’s best player, Traquina, beat Artur after left back Benito had failed to intercept an innocuous-looking through ball. Just before the break, the minnows were ahead, Traquina turning provider with a fine free-kick from the left which Erivelto headed home.

On 54 minutes, Benfica were level, with Cristante launching a long pass into the heart of the area and Jonas hitting it first time past Taborda. On 71 minutes Benfica drew ahead, Pizzi feeding Jonas to grab his hat-trick and raise Benfiquistas’ optimism for the season. Here is a fine, versatile striker who isn’t registered for Europa but will prove an enormous asset domestically.

Elsewhere, the shock of the day was provided by third-tier Varzim, who knocked out Estoril Praia, 2-1. Equally shocking for Boavisteiros was the 4-1 thumping they received at Desportivo das Aves, for which coach Petit apologised to the fans. And Lisbon side Oriental travelled to the Algarve to beat Olhanense 4-2, helped by a hat-trick from Mauro Bastos.
