União de Leiria confirmed Tuesday that they have agreed on the sale of Brazilian forward Maciel to FC Porto, with midfielder Tiago (definitive) and forwards Serginho (currently at Nacional) and Hugo Almeida (both on loan) possibly going the other way. Maciel has yet to agree terms with Porto, however. UDL have also announced that they have signed Brazilian defensive midfielder Otacílio, 31, from Brazilian club Baía for a season and a half and Angolan forward Maurito, 22, for three seasons.

António Cicílio, Rivaldo's representative, has confirmed that FC Porto have made inquiries about the possibility of signing the Brazilian forward. Rivaldo is looking for a club after a spell at AC Milan.

Moreirense have reinforced themselves with two midfielders: Bruno from FC Porto and newcomer to Portuguese footbnall, the Brazilian Romeu, 29, from Ponte Preta.

Manchester United and Chelsea of the Englsih Premier League are interested in signing Real Madrid's Portuguese international Luís Figo, according to Spanish sports daily Marca.

Boavista's little-used forwards Márcio Santos and Yuri are on the transfer list. The club want to reduce the players on the pay-roll, and they have an excess of options for the attack.

Madeira club Marítimo want to sign Benfica's Hungarian striker Miklos Féher. The clubs have agreed the move in theory, but they need the say-so of the player.

Swiss central defender Alessandro Mangiarratti, 25, of FC Will 1900, has signed for Belenenses on a contract that will take him through to the end of next season.

Benfica midfielder Emilio Peixe has asked to leave União de Leiria, where he has been on loan, and return to the Luz or to another club where he would have regular first team football. Peixe has been dogged by injury throughout his career, but he has also not been able to take advantage of great opportunities that had him on the books at Sporting, FC Porto and Benfica. He was voted the player of the tournament when Portugal won the under-20 World Cup in Lisbon in 1991. Also playing in the tournament were Figo, Rui Costa, Roberto Carlos ...

Portuguese international midfielder Hugo Viana's on/off loan return to Sporting is now definitely off. Newcastle manager Bobby Robson has changed his mind about releasing the player, saying he needs him at St James Park. Viana is not seeing much first team football and wanted a move to get some and to be able to impress National coach Felipe Scolari ahead of Euro 2004. "I'm disappointed," said Viana, "I deserved more respect". Sporting are desperate to find cover for Fábio Rochemback, who will be spending a few weeks with the Brazilian Olympic squad.

FC Porto look set to sign União de Leiria forward Maciel, who coach José Mourinho knows well from his time at the club. The transfer becomes more urgent with the news of the serious knee injury to Derlei which will put him out until at least the end of the season. Derlei and Maciel were teammates at União.

Liverpool defender Abel Xavier, unwanted at Anfield and looking for a club, has responded to accusations that he sowed rumours of a possible move to Real Madrid, reported in the Spanish paper Marca but subsequently denied as "ridiculous" by Real coach Carlos Queirós. "I have absolutely nothing to do with the news published in that paper," he said.

The Greek international left back Fyssas is definitely on his way to Benfica and will arrive at the end of December, the club's Director Desportivo António Simões announced Friday.

The Greek left-back Fyssas ends contract with Panathinaikos at the end of the year and is set to join Benfica at zero cost, it was reported in the Greek press Tuesday. Benfica have struggled to find solutions for the position in question, recently playing centre-back Ricardo Rocha there.

Arsenal manager Arséne Wenger has revealed to the London Evening Standard that the club was interested in signing young Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting, before Manchester United snapped him up. However, the London club had baulked at the price; United ended up paying 15 million euros for the player.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Hélder Postiga made their English Premier League débuts Saturday for Manchester United and Tottenham respectively. Ronaldo played the last half hour and revived a sleepy Manchester attack, helping them to a 4-0 win over Bolton, while Postiga played the first hour and could not help his side avoid a 0-1 defeat at Birmingham.

Benfica's coach José Camacho has said that he does not want Brazilian Roger in the side. The diminutive midffielder has failed to establish himself after two years at the club, and a naïve performance by him helped Benfica to a 1-3 reverse against Lázio in Rome Wednesday.

According to sports daily A Bola, Sporting, flush with new cash from the sale of Ricardo Quaresma to Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United, may be interested in signing Norwegian striker John Carew from Valencia.

Brazilian forward Serginho, out of favour at FC Porto despite having just arrived, has been released by the club and looks to be heading for Nacional of Madaeira, on loan.

French ´keeper Fabrice Catherine, formerly of French club Sedan, has signed a two year contract with Liga de Honra club Estoril Praia.

Mário Jardel, signed by Bolton of the English Premier League, is back in Portugal to take care of personal business. Still unfit, he is hoping to play at least a few minutes in Bolton's opening game against Manchester United at the weekend. Sporting will receive 1.5 million euros from Bolton, depending on performance, and will have first preference on the player when and if he moves, as well as 50% of his future transfer fee.

Former Sporting striker Mário Jardel has found a new home: Bolton, of the English Premiership. He has signed on a two-year contract. Sporting will receive 2.5 million euros, the player 1.2 million a year. The Brazilian has a Portuguese passport and will be classed as a Community player.

Argentinian striker Martin Palermo of Spanish side Villareal is set to sign for Sporting, who have cash in hand from the sale of Quaresma to Barcelona and Ronaldo to Manchester United. The position of striker has been a problem for the side in the pre-season, Brazilian Silva (from Boavista) not really looking up to scratch.

Estrela da Amadora, promoted to the SuperLiga this season, have signed Brazilian striker Júlio César, 23, from Lokomotiv Moscow.

Brazilian central defender Maurício Fernandes has signed for Sporting Braga from Brazilian side Juventude on a two-year contract, with an option for two more years.

Real Bétis coach Victor Fernandez has said that he is not interested in using Portuguese striker João Tomás this season. The player was in the process of moving to Vitória de Guimarães on loan, but then thought that he would be recalled to Seville following the injury of local favourite Dani. João Tomás is now in limbo and awaiting decisions from above.

Turkish side Fenerbahce have released German ´keeper Robert Enke, formerly of Benfica, following a 0-3 defeat to Istanbulspor. Enke went to Turkey from Barcelona when Turkish international Rustu went the other way.

Portuguese international utility player Fréchaut, a member of Boavista's title-winning side of three seasons ago, out for much of last through injury but now making a comeback, has extended his contract with the club until 2006.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been given David Beckham's old number 7 at Manchester United. "I must confess that I'd rather have had 28 [his number at Sporting] but it was not to be - what can you do?" he said.

In an interview given to sports daily A Bola, he also said: "Actually, I would like to have done a bit more in Portugal, but you can't have everything you want ... in spite of the difficulties the club had last season, I think they can do great things this season and be champions ... it won't be because I left that they're not champions."

The president of Sporting plc, José Eduardo Bettencourt, admitted Tuesday that the club had been swayed to sell Cristiano Ronaldo this season by the player's wish to leave for Manchester immediately. He also revealed that the club were influenced by the fact that the player could have left for nothing as his contract was going to expire at the end of the coming season. Ronaldo, 18, will earn around two million euros in the first of his five years at Old Trafford.

Benfica have found solutions for some of the players released from the club. Midfielder Andrade is going to Tenerife, central defender João Manuel Pinto possibly to Qatar and midfielder Ednilson to Vitória de Guimarães.

FC Porto's Brazilian winger Serginho, signed recently from Paços de Ferreira, looks to be on his way out of the club already after an alleged breach of the club's disciplinary code.

União de Leiria have reinforced their squad with two signings: Brazilian sweeper Eduardo Oliveira, 29, signed from St Étienne, and Hungarian striker Ferenc Horvath.

Sporting confirmed Tuesday that they have sold 18-year-old winger Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United for 15 million euros. The contract is for five years, and Sporting retain first refusal on the player when and if he transfers out of the English club. Sporting wanted to sell the player but keep him on loan this season, but United were desperate to sign him right away, especially following his impressive performance against United in the friendly between the two sides last Wednesday. Sporting have now lost both their star wingers, Ricardo Quaresma having signed for Barcelona a month ago.

Portuguese international Sérgio Conceição has amicably rescinded his contract with Inter Milan and is now a free agent. Former club FC Porto have said that they have no plans to contract the right-sided player.

According to Spanish sports daily Marca, Real Madrid may be interested in signing Sporting's captain and central defender Beto to replace Hierro, released at the end of last season. Real coach Queiróz will know Beto from his time at Sporting.

´Keeper Ricardo confirmed his signing for Sporting from Boavista Monday, to scenes of euphoria around the still-standing Alvalade stadium. The contract is for five years and will cost Sporting just two million euros, to be paid over 18 months. Boavista will have 20% of any future trnasfer fee, while Sporting will have first option on Boavista's home-grown talent. Ricardo will earn 750,000 euros a year.

FC Porto have loaned out Brazilian striker Pena to Sporting Braga for a season. Pena took over from Mário Jardel at Porto three seasons ago and finished top scorer in the league, but then had a poor season and was loaned out to Strasbourg. This is the player's chance to prove himself once again.

Grêmio's Brazilian international defender Anderson Polga will sign for Sporting this week after a medical check.

Boavista's Portuguese international goalkeeper Ricardo has said a definitive 'no' to Benfica. Negotiations stalled after Benfica could not offer the player what he thought he was worth. In all likelihood, Ricardo will stay at Boavista for yet another year.

The Paraguayan Quintana (from FC Porto) and the Brazilian Laelson (from Vitória de Guimarães) have joined Moreirense on loan.

The details of the transfer deal that took Sporting's 'Mustang' Ricardo Quaresma to Barcelona have been revealed: six million euros, rising to a possible eight depending on performance; the loan of Brazilian Rochemback for three years, during which Sporting will have to pay only 35% of his salary; an option to buy the player or 50% of the trnasfer fee if he is sold during that time; first option on Quaresma should he return to Portugal, and 10% of the transfer fee if he is sold on.

South African striker Benni McCarthy was presented as an FC Porto player Tuesday. The former Celta de Vigo player, who has already had a spell on loan at the Antas, has signed a four-year deal. "This is the happiest day of my life," he said. McCarthy will wear the number 77.

It was a busy day for União de Leiria, who signed three players: French goalkeeper Fabrice from Sedan, Argentinian Cavallo from Banfield and Brazilian Caíco from Goiás.

Marítimo also had their pens out. Midfielders Chainho signed from Panathinaikos, and Bino from Tenerife.

Sporting winger Ricardo Quaresma will officialy sign for Barcelona Friday on a four year contract. The fee is eight million euros, with Brazilian Fábio Rochemback heading the other way.

União de Leiria's midfielder Silas has signed a four-year deal with newly promoted English Premiership club Wolverhampton Wanderers. The fee is one million euros, but can rise depending on how many games Silas plays. Silas is the third Portuguese player to move to England this close season after Hélder Postiga (Tottenham) and Cândido Costa (Derby).

Boavista's Brazilian striker (Elpídeo) Silva has moved to Sporting on a three-year contract. A part of the deal is that Sporting will take part in Boavista's 'Centenary Tournament', between August 1st and 3rd. Benfica and one other team will be in the mini competition.

Entering Boavista is former Académica midfielder André, 25.

Young FC Porto winger Cândido Costa has been loaned out to English First Division club Derby County for a season. He spent last season on loan to Vitória de Setúbal.

Midfielder André, 25, last season at Académica, has signed for Boavista on a four-year contract.

Yugoslavian winger Lubinko Drulovic, 12 years in Portugal at Gil Vicente, FC Porto and Benfica, is to return to his homeland to play for Partizan Belgrade.

Former FC Porto forward Paulo Costa, 23, has signed a four-year deal with French club Bordeaux, where compatriots Pauleta, Caneira and Bruno Basto currently play.

The transfer of Portuguese international 'keeper Ricardo from Boavista to Benfica has floundered on the matter of salary - Ricardo was not apparently willing to settle for the same as he was getting at Boavista. He has, for the moment, returned to Boavista for pre-season training but has not ruled out the possibility of resumig negotiations with Benfica.

McCarthy has already spent a spell at FCP, and he is the favourite of coach José Mourinho to replace Hélder Postiga , sold on to Tottenham Hotspurs last week.

Middlesbrough, of the English Premiership, are interested in signing Sporting's Brazilian striker Mário Jardel, but want to have more information about his "physical and mental fitness". Jardel had a poor season, caused mainly by personal problems.

Former FC Porto winger, the Yugoslavian Drulovic, has signed for Leixões, newly promoted to the segunda, from Benfica where he was out of contract.

FC Porto have signed Portuguese international midfielder Pedro Mendes from Vitória de Guimarães. Going the other way are Rúbens Júnior and Bruno Alves.

Boavista have signed Moroccan international winger Ali from Gil Vicente. Meanwhile, Boavista president João Loureiro said that it is almost certain that striker Silva will be leaving, either to go to a Portuguese or Turkish club.

FC Porto president Pinto da Costa definitively quashed rumours Friday that South African striker Benni McCarthy would be returning to FCP from Celta de Vigo. It was thought that coach José Mourinho would bring McCarthy, a favourite of his, back to the club now that they have a bit of spare cash from the sale of Hélder Postiga to Spurs.

Northern club Varzim, relegated from the SuperLiga last season, are to contact the FPF to see if they are entitled to a share of Hélder Postiga's transfer fee. The now-Spurs player was on Varzim's books as a youngster before FC Porto swooped and nailed him, and the club wants to be compensated for Postiga's early development.

Portuguese striker Pauleta has refused to extend his contract with Bordeaux because the sums offered were not up to his expectations. Marseille or PSG are possible destinations if the player and the club cannot iron out their differences.

Midfielder Fernando Aguiar has returned to Benfica after a season out on loan to União de Leiria.

Sporting have more or less confirmed the signing of Paços de Ferreira right back Mário Sérgio for 750,000 euros. The deal just needs the OK from the player. Sporting lost Brazilian right back César Prates this week to Galatasaray. The Greek striker Nikolaidis has left AEK Athens and may be headed for Sporting.

Another Sérgio, the forward Paulo, has left Montpellier and signed a two-year contract with Sporting Braga.

Liverpool have contacted the representative of Sporting's teenage winger Cristiano Ronaldo to discuss a possible move to the English club. The Portuguese U-21 international broke onto the scene this season by the hand of Laszlo Bölöni.

Midfielder Jordão, formerly of Estrela da Amadora, Benfica and Sporting Braga, has been released by English club West Bromwich Albion, relegated from the Premiership last season. Jordão had a year left on his contract but was dogged by injury last season and played only three games for the club.

Portuguese international winger Nuno Capucho has signed a two-year deal with Glasgow Rangers. The 31-year-old has not been a favourite flavour of coach José Mourinho this year.

Full-back Secretário has renewed his contract with Porto for one more season, but had to take a cut in wages in the process.

Porto have also signed Boavista's promising young all-rounder José Bosingwa on a four-year contract. The Portuguese U-21 international goes across town while Ricardo Sousa (midfield) and Ricardo Silva (central defender) go the other way. Boavista maintain 30% of the player's pass.

Sporting officials are in Italy to try to persuade Paraguayan central defender Carlos Gamarra to leave Inter Milan.

Brazilian club Palmeiras of São Paulo, now in the Brazilian second division, are the latest to show an interest in contracting Sporting's unsettled striker Mário Jardel. They are trying to find a way of coming up with the three million dollars that Sporting are asking.

Glasgow Rangers have confirmed that they will be meeting representatives of FC Porto next week to discuss the possibility of a transfer of Porto's international winger Nuno Capucho to Scotland. Sunday's Taça de Portugal final could, then, be Capucho's last game in blue and white stripes.

Newcastle are very keen to sign FC Porto's Mágico ('Magician') Deco. Newcastle coach Bobby Robson remains on good terms with Porto after his spell there. Deco will cost something like 20 million euros.

Glasgow Rangers are interested in signing FC Porto's midfielder/winger Capucho. The player didn't have a very convincing season at the northern club and has expressed an interest in moving on.

Meanwhile, Mário Jardel's agent has said that an agreement for rescission has been drawn up with Sporting. If Jardel can find himslef a club, he is free to go. Glasgow Rangers have also expressed an interst in the Brazxilian recently, but in the last few days the interest has died down.

Boavista have signed midfielder Ricardo Sousa from Beira-Mar. President João Loureiro emphasised that this will be the only transfer into the cash-strapped club involving money changing hands. Sports daily A Bola reports a Madrid radio station as guaranteeing that Sporting's young wingers Ricardo Quaresma and Cristiano Ronaldo have signed preliminary contracts with Atlético Madrid for next season. Sporting have denied the news.

Benfica have signed Bolivian midfielder Ronald Garcia on a three-year contract. Garcia, 22, is an international for his country. He is currently at Segunda club Alverca and will stay there on loan for another season.

Wednesday's edition of A Bola once again insisted that Manchester United are at the head of a long queue of major clubs to sign Sporting's meteoric winger Ricardo Quaresma. It suggests that a protocol signed between the clubs, and the say-so of United's Portuguese Assitant Coach Carlos Queiroz, will tip the balance in United's favour given a deal at the end of the season.

Benfica have been ordered by the Portuguese Liga to pay Beleneneses over a million euros for a transfer that occurred in 1997. Central defender Paulo Madeira left Belenenses for Spanish teams Levante and subsequently Burgos, but this was seen as a ploy to ease the move to Benfica. the player is currently on the books of Brazilian side Fluminense of Rio de Janeiro.

The 23-year-old was previously at Boavista and was sold to Aves, but has impressed with his poerfomances this year. Boavista´s midfield has been weakened by the sale of Petit to Benfica and the injuries to Jorge Silva and Erwin Sanchez.

The transfer of Brazilian striker Gaúcho to South Korean side Suwon Samsung has fallen through. Marítimo president Carlos Pereira has decided that the club's top scorer, and equal top scorer in the SuperLiga, is too important for the Madeiran side's league campaign.

Sporting Braga have signed central defender Emerson, 24, of Rio de Janeiro side Vasco da Gama until the end of the season. The player is seen as a direct replacement for Odair, who recently transferred to Belenenses and will make his début for the Lisbon side against FC Porto this weekend. Out of Braga goes central defender Nuno Mendes, who will sign a five-month contract with struggling Moreirense Monday.

Benfica are hoping to sign Parma left back Júnior on loan. The deal is set to go through in the coming week.

English Premiership club Sunderland are in the race for União de Leiria midfielder Silas, recently picked to play for the Portuguese 'B' side. First Division club Wolverhampton are also interested, and the player could be on his way north by the end of January.

Marítimo's Brazilian striker Gaúcho, 30, top scorer in the SuperLiga with ten goals (along with Benfica's Simão) is set to sign for Japanese club Yokohama Marinos. Gaúcho moved to Estrela da Amadora seven years ago from Brazilian club Sport Recife and signed for the Madeiran club last season.

Benfica full-back Cabral has turned down a loan move to Dutch first Division club Roosendaal. the club already has Portuguese David Nascimento in its ranks.

FC Porto midfielder Bruno will return on loan to his previous club Marítimo until the end of the season. He has not had many chances to shine since moving to Porto at the beginning of this season. Also confirmed for Marítimo is Danny, sold to Sporting but unable to make his mark there.

Boavista have signed 20-year-old striker Yuri from Segunda club FC Maia on a four-and-a-half year contract. Central defender Saul will go the other way. Boavista's president João Loureiro said that the club will proceed to re-shuffle the squad when the transfer window opens in January. Brazilian striker Serginho has already been released.

Sporting's Ghanaian striker Ayew could be heading for China. He has six months left on his contract but has not been an option for coach Laszlo Bölöni and has been training with the 'B' team. Ayew was a key player in Sporting's first tittle in 18 years in the 1999-2000 season.
