Sporting presented their first signings of the transfer window Friday: right back Abel, 27, on loan from Sporting Braga until the end of the season, and creative midfielder, the Argentinian Romagnoli, 24, signed on loan from Mexican club Vera Cruz for a season and a half. "I have several tattoos, all with a meaning: I have my parents, my daughter, my wife ... now I'm going to get a lion done," the latter said.

Sporting's Mozambican left back Paíto has rescinded his contract and signed for Vitória de Guimarães, at least until the end of the season.

But Sporting's hopes to sign Portuguese international defender Marco Caneira on loan from Valência appear to have floundered on differences between the two clubs.

Still with Sporting, Hugo and Varela have been offered to Vitória de Setúbal on loan, although the two players have yet to agree to the move.

Vitória in turn look likely to sell 'keeper Moretto to Benfica, the move awaiting the ok of the player, still in Brazil for the Christmas break. Vitória have sold defender José Fonte, 22, to Benfica, where he will be for four and a half years, although he is likely to be loaned out until the end of the season. Fonte rescinded with Vitória over unpaid wages, but Benfica have offered to recompense the struggling club anyway. Winger Hélio Roque, 20, has gone the other way, on loan until the end of the season

Sporting Braga have taken midfielder Wender back from Sporting on loan until the end of the season (a swap for Abel, going the other way - see above). They have also signed Argentinian midfielder Carlos Marinelli, 23, on loan from Torino, also until the end of the season. Among the teams he has represented are Boca Juniors and Middlesborough.

Boavista have signed defensive midfielder Paulo Sousa from Estoril, who returns to the club where he learned his trade.

Marítimo have signed Brazilian forward Zé Carlos, 30, from Brazilian club Juventude de Caxias. He signs until the end of the season, with one more as option. Leaving the Madeiran club is Slovenian midfielder Andrej Komac, who returns to his country citing family problems.

Gil Vicente have signed Angolan forward Mateus, 21, from Segunda B (third division) side Lixa. Mateus wants to get noticed with the hope of making the Angolan squad for the World Cup.

Portuguese international midfielder Maniche, unhappy in Russia, has signed for Chelsea for two and a half years from Moscow Dyamo. He rejoins coach José Mourinho, who he helped to win the Champions League for FC Porto two seasons ago.

Sporting have secured the loan for one and a half seasons of Argentinian midfielder Romagnoli, 24, from Vera Cruz, according to the Mexican club's official site. Sporting also have their eye on Portuguese international defender Marco Caneira from Valência.

Struggling Belenenses are interested in the loans of wingers Carlitos from Benfica and Ivanildo from FC Porto, but any move is conditional on the expenditure foreseen, as the Lisbon club are far from rich.

There are various moves on the cards come the transfer window.

Marítimo's useful Brazilian winger Manduca looks set to join Benfica until 2009 for a fee of half a million euros. Meanwhile, Brazilian left back Léo is wanted by Rio club Fluminense , and midfielder Bruno Aguiar, 24, has signed for Scottish side Hearts, on loan until the end of the season.

Another Brazilian, Vítor Baía's understudy at FC Porto, Helton, is wanted by Brazilian club Corinthinas. Helton has had no chance at Porto, and the northern giants are reported to want to sign Moretto from Vitória de Setúbal.

Yet another Brazilian: Sporting striker Silva, blocked by Liedson and Deivid, is set to rescind his contract by mutual agreement so that he can negotiate his future elsewhere.

Sporting Braga have signed South Korean international Kim Dong-Hyun, from Suwon Bluewings. The 21-year old forward signs on a four-year contract.

French sports paper L'Equipe has reported that Monaco are interested in signing Maniche, unhappy at Moscow Dynamo. The French club joins Atlético Madrid and Chelsea in the queue for the Portuguese international midfielder.

Barcelona, through spokesman Beguiristain, have put a lid on speculation in the Spanish press that Brazilian/Portuguese international midfielder Deco could be on the move from the club. "He's one of the best players in Europe and the World. There's no chance of him leaving," said president Joan Laporta's right hand man.

Sporting have loaned Brazilian left back Edson to Legia Warsaw until the end of the season. Edson came from União de Leiria in the close season but has been dogged by injury. Legia are also interested in signing Brazilian forward Claudio Pitbull from FC Porto.

French midfielder Siramana Dembelé has rescinded his contract with Vitória de Setúbal, citing overdue salaries. Salaries of the players at the club are two and a half months late.

Gil Vicente have released Edson and Sidraílson to return to Santa Cruz de Recife. The Brazilian players still had a year and a half left on their contracts.

Also returning to Brazil is Académica left back Lira, on loan to Rio club Botafogo until December 2006. Lira has a contract with the Coimbra club until 2009, but moves alleging personal problems.

Sporting's Brazilian defender/midfielder Rogério, alleging family reasons, is heading for a return to his country at the service of Rio club Fluminense. The move will take place in January.

Also wanted on loan in Brazil are Rogério's Sporting teammate Deivid and FC Porto midfielder Diego, both on Santos' shopping list.

Sporting's Chilean striker Maurício Pinilla has joined Racing Santander of Spain on loan until the end of the season.

FC Porto striker Hélder Postiga has joined French club St Étienne on loan.

FC Porto favourite Jorge Costa, never an option under Dutch coach Co Adriaanse, has rescinded his contract with the club and is set to sign Monday for Belgian side Standard Liége , joining the Portuguese players Sérgio Conceição and Moreira.

French club St Etienne have become the latest possible destination of FC Porto striker Hélder Postiga, also out of favour with Adriaanse. Touted to be joining Real Bétis, the Spanish club appears to have stepped back.

Valência's Portuguese international defender Caneira has voiced a wish to be loaned out to another club to be in form ahead of next summer's World Cup. He is not getting regular games at the Spanish club under coach Quique Flores.

Sporting's Chilean striker Marício Pinilla seems set to join Spanish club Racing de Santander to play more first-team football, as he told Chilean daily Las Últimas Notícias.

Paris St Germain have entered the race to sign Portuguese international midfielder Maniche from Moscow Dynamo, where the player is unhappy. Also in the race are Atlético Madrid and, apparently, Manchester United.

FC Porto's Hélder Postiga, out of favour with coach Co Adriaanse, looks set to join Spanish side Real Bétis during the transfer window. Porto club captain Jorge Costa is all but a Standard Liége player come January.

Also interesting Bétis is Académica's Brazilian striker Marcel. Acadéimica want 3.5 million euros.

Moving to Spain may be Sporting's Chilean striker Maurício Pinilla, who cannot hold down a first team place in Lisbon. Struggling Racing de Santander could be his destination.

Benfica, faced with the injuries to regulars Moreira and Quim, need a goalkeeper and are in the market come the window. Liverpool's Dudek appears to be high up the list after Inter's Toldo dismissed the possibility of moving to Lisbon out of hand.

FC Porto captain Jorge Costa, injured but then apparently out of favour with coach Co Adriaanse, has said that he will leave the club in December. Indications are that he will join Belgian club Standard Liége, to join former Porto teammate Sérgio Conceição. Costa spent a year away from his first love, Porto, in the 2001-02 season, representing English club Charlton.

Sporting are to take up the option to extend for an extra season the contracts of Brazilians Anderson Polga and Liedson, whose contracts expire at the end of this season. The players are likely to contest the validity of the move.

FC Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has said that Benni McCarthy will not be leaving the club during the next transfer window. The South African striker desperately wanted to play in England, and he had one foot in English club West Ham in the close season.

Negotiations to take Benfica captain Simão Sabrosa to Liverpool fell through Wednesday. It was reported that Liverpool had offered Benfica 18 million euros and 3 million euros a season to Simão, but Benfica had insisted on 20 million.

Meanwhile, Italian striker Miccoli, signed on a year's loan from Juventus, was offically presented in the Luz.

Sporting have signed a three-year deal with Sporting Braga midfielder João Alves, 25. The Lisbon club have paid 2.5 million euros for 50% of his pass. Alves recently made his début for the Selecção.

João Alves is seen as a replacement for Fábio Rochemback. English club Middlesborough have paid 7 million euros to Barcelona, who held the Brazilian's pass, but Sporting will receive half of that sum. Rochemback joins Middlesborough on a five-year deal. Middlesborough have also given a one-year deal to former Portuguese international defender Abel Xavier. This will be his 11th professional club.

FC Porto turned down an offer of nine million euros from English club West Ham for South African striker Benni McCarthy. The player was keen to move to English football, but the club and coach Co Adriaanse wanted him to stay. Meanwhile, Porto have signed Slovakian left back Marek Cech, 22, on a four-year contract.

Boavista have signed Paraguayan midfielder Diego Figueredo, 23, on loan from Spanish club Valladolid. The club has sold Brazilian midfielder André Barreto, 26, to Polish side Wislaw Krakow on a five-year contract.

Forward Marco Ferreira, 27, who belongs to FC Porto, has been loaned out to Penafiel for a season. He was previously on loan to Vitória de Guimarães. Penafiel have also secured the loan for another season of 'keeper Nuno Santos from Sporrting.

Former Sporting favourite, the Romanian forward Mariusz Niculae, has joned Belgian club Standard Liége on a one-year contract. He will play alongside Sérgio Conceição.

As the end of the transfer deadline approaches, there has been a flurry of activity in Portugal.

Benfica, widely perceived to be lacking in quality, especially in attack, have secured the signing of Greek midfielder/forward Karagounis from Inter Milan, although as a free agent, i.e. at no cost. The contract is for three years. The Greek international will only be able to report for duty on 8 September after international duty.

After lengthy negotiations, Benfica have also managed the loan of Italian striker Miccoli from Juventus. The loan period is a year, with option to buy at five million euros. Miccoli is expected Wednesday in Lisbon.

Out of the club could be heading captain Simão Sabrosa. Sports website maisfutebol reports that Liverpool have offered 12 million euros for the Portuguese international winger, but Benfica are insisting on 15.

Sporting look set to achieve a recent want - the signing of Brazilian forward Wender from Sporting Braga.

Sporting Braga are to sign left-sided defender/midfielder Rossato from Spanish club Real Sociedad. Rossato made his name in Portugal with Nacional, was transferred to FC Porto at the beginning of last season but was then bounced to Spain.

Boavista have signed right back Rui Duarte on loan from Liga de Honra side Estoril for a season. The signing is to compensate for the departure of Nélson to Benfica.

Académica have signed Brazilian defender Pedro Silva, 24, on a one-year deal from Internacional of Porto Alegre, where he was on loan from Palmeiras.

Paços de Ferreira have signed right back Mangualde from Felgueiras on a one-year contract.

Meanwhile, French club Nancy are considering contracting Brazilian striker Mário Jardel, a living legend of the last decade of Portuguese football.

English club Everton have signed Nuno Valente, 30, on a three-year contract. The Portuguese international left back has been in dispute with his club, FC Porto, over his desire to play for the Portuguese Selecção - he was seriously injured in an international last season that put him out for months. The club had ordered him to choose between club or country. He chose to move out.

Valência have borrowed midfielder Hugo Viana from Newcastle for a season. Viana spent last season at Sporting on loan, Valência now have three Portuguese on their books: defender Marco Caneira, Miguel, who signed this week, and now Hugo Viana.

Chelsea midfielder Tiago, formerly of Benfica, looks set to join French champions Lyon on a five-year contract for a fee of 12 million euros.

Liverpool have offered 12 million euros for Benfica's Brazilian international central defender Luisão, but the Lisbon club turned them down.

Former Académica striker, the Mozambican Dário, who was playing in Qatar, has joined Vitória de Guimarães for a season.

Former Benfica full-back Miguel has passed the medical and been officially presented as a Valência player. Meanwhile, the Joint Arbitration Board found for Benfica in the case of Miguel's rescission of his contract, but the decision serves no practial purpose since Miguel has already signed for the Spanish club, with Benfica's eventual blessing.

The soap-opera of the move from Benfica of right back Miguel seems finally to have come to an end. Benfica and Valência have agreed on a fee of eight million euros for a five-year deal, and Miguel went public Thursday to apologise to Benfica fans and the club President, Luís Filipe Vieira, for any misunderstandings in the process.

Another right-back, the Portuguese international Alex, who only joined the club at the end of last season from Vitória de Guimarães, is set to join German club Wolfsburg, after a medical. The contract will be for four years and Wolfsburg will pay around two million euros. To fill the gap at right back, Benfica have signed Cape Verdean Nélson, 22, from Boavista on a five-year contract.

Meanwhile, Benfica have had to give up their latest target in their desperate search for a striker. Juventus were contacted for Miccoli, but Benfica just couldn't meet the fee asked for.

Sporting and Middlesborough have decided on terms for the transfer of Cameroonian winger Douala ... but the player now says that he is not interested in leaving Alvalade. Meanwhile, veteran defender Abel Xavier, who represented AS Roma last season, is training at the English club with a view to signing for them.

French utility player Tixier has joined União de Leiria on a free from Académica, where he spent the last three seasons.

Sporting's newly-signed Brazilian striker Deivid has told Brazilian daily O Globo that he wants to return to Santos because he misses the club and has not been able to settle in to life in Portugal.

Chelsea have loaned Portuguese defender Nuno Morais, 21, to Marítimo for a season.

Barcelona's Argentinian forward Javier Saviola has joined Seville on a season's loan. Saviola was the latest in a long line of forwards mooted for Benfica but who have ended up elsewhere.

English club Middlesborough continue to be interested in Sporting's Cameroonian winger Douala, despite the fact that he was used in Wednesday's Champions League game against Udinese, thus making it impossible for him to play for another club in Europe this season. Middlesborough's initial offer to Sporting was of six million euros, which was turned down. Menawhile, Sporting have contacted Newcastle about the possibility of another loan of midfielder Hugo Viana.

Sporting Braga have loaned Edinho, 23, to Paços de Ferreira. The striker scored 22 goals for Braga's 'B' team last season. He joins Brazilian striker Ronny, signed on a three-year deal from América do Natal.

FC Porto have loaned midfielder Sandro, 28, to Turkish club Vestel Manisaspor for a season. The player was close to signing for Boavista, but the financial weight of Turkish football influenced the player's decision. FC Porto have also loaned Brazilian Leandro do Bomfim to São Paulo for a season.

Académica midfielder Rafael Gaúcho and forward Delmer have rescinded their contracts with the club by mutual consent.

Midfielder Juninho Petrolina has joined Brazilian club Náutico of Recife after being released at the end of last season by Beleneneses.

Brazilian striker Manoel has joined Vitória de Guimarães on loan for a season from Sporting, who he had joined only a brief time ago. Manoel was at Guimarães before, in the 2000/01 season.

Left back Areias has joined Boavista from neighbours FC Porto, loaned for a season.

Feyenoord have officially denied that their striker Kalou has signed for a group of English ivestors, who were to sign the player on to Benfica. The Dutch club has also pressed charges on the basis of falsification with regard to the documents the group says it has in its possession, and has asked the Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad to correct the news it ran Monday.

Meanwhile, Greek left back Fyssas has left the Luz for Hearts of Scotland.

Middlesboro said that they are still interested in signing Sporting's Cameroonian winger Douala, despite their initial offer of six million euros being turned down flat by Sporting.

Leixões of the Liga de Honra (second division) can now register players after submitting proof that the club's position re tax and social security is now regularised.

Luís Figo was officially presented as an Inter Milan player Saturday. He found it hard to hide his bitterness at the way he had to leave Real Madrid: "I was hoping to leave Real in a different fashion, but my conscience is clear. In Madrid I met someone [Vanderlei Luxemburgo] who didn't have confidence in my qualities. I leave a little upset and disappointed with the person in charge of the team." Figo will wear the number 7 shirt at Inter.

Luís Figo will undergo medical tests Friday before signing a two-year contract with Inter Milan. The Portuguese international will earn around 7 million euros for the two seasons, much less than he would have eraned at Real Madrid (six million a season) but more than he was initially offered by Inter (5 million).

Sporting have released striker Manoel, who they contracted on a three-year deal just a matter of weeks ago from relegated Moreirense. Vitória de Guimarães are reported to be interested in signing the Brazilian.

Sporting's Cameroonian winger Douala is in negotiations with Premier League club Middlesborough.

Belenenses have loaned central defender Gonçalo Brandão, 19, to Premier League side Charlton.

It seems, acording to sports dailies Marca and Gazzetta dello Sport, of Spain and Italy respectively, that Real Madrid's Luís Figo and Inter Milan have come to an arrangement over a contract that will take the Portuguese international to Italian football for the first time. Figo had one year left on his contract at Real, but due to the evident differences of opinion between him and Real coach Wanderlei Luxemburgo, the split was inevitable. The transfer fee will be zero (Fiigo is 32) but the player is expected to earn nine million euro over his two seasons at the Italian club.

Real Madrid's Luís Figo was in Milan Tuesday to to try negotiate personally a possible move to Inter on a two-year contract, but the former World Player of the Year returned to Spain empty-handed, Spanish sports paper Marca reported. Valência have also confirmed their interest in the Portuguese international.

Académica have signed midfielder Filipe Teixeira, 24, from Paris St Germain on a two-year deal.

Former Sporting and Tottenham winger José Dominguez has not had his contract renewed by Rio de Janeiro club Vasco da Gama.

The Luís Figo transfer saga continues. He said Wednesday that if he doesn't get regular football at Real Madrid, then he will leave ...but the major obstacle to any transfer seems to be his salary demands: around 6 million euros a year, while Inter Milan, a possible destination for the former World Player of the Year, have offered him half that.

The Brazilian U-20 international Diego has signed for Benfica on a five-year contract, but has been loaned out directly to Flamengo of Rio de Janeiro until at least January of 2006.

Sporting signed two players at the end of the week: Brazilian striker Deivid de Souza from Bordeaux for four years and central defender Tonel, from Marítimo, for three.

FC Porto have released three more players to join Leo Lima, discarded last week, in the reject pile: creative midfielder Leandro do Bonfim, defensive midfielder Sandro and left back Areias . Coach Co Adriaanse said that the squad is now settled.

Benfica have loaned striker Karadas to English club Portsmouth for a year. The Norwegian international scored for his new club Saturday in the 2-2 draw with Mónaco.

Vitória de Guimarães have signed the Tunisian midfielder Celim Benachour, 23, nicknamed 'The Tunisian Zidane', from Paris SG on a one-year deal.

Brazilian forward Fábio, 24, has joined Vitória de Setúbal from Gil Vicente. Vitória president Chumbita Nunes also announced Wednesday that Senegalese right back Madyor N'Diaye will be signing for the club in the coming days.

Sporting Braga have failed to reach a deal with Zimbabwean Shingi Kaondera, who was on trial at the club for two weeks.

'Keeper Yannick looks to be on his way from Benfica to Olympique de Marseilles. The Frenchman signed for Benfica from Alverca last season but was blocked from getting into the first team by Portuguese internationals Quim and Moreira.

Midfielder Luís Loureiro has joined Sporting on a four-year deal from Moscow Dynamo as part of the transfer that took Nigerian defender Enakarhire the other way.

FC Porto have released midfielder Leo Lima, who return to Portugal from the club's pre-season tour of Holland. Coach Co Adriaanse said: "He's a midfielder, and we have lots of midfielders." Adriaanse has bawled out the Brazilian several times during pre-season training for lack of effort.

Brazilian club Grémio of Porto Alegre have said that midfielder Anderson, 17, will return and play for them until the transfer deal with FC Porto is cut and dried, which is not yet the case.

Newly promoted Naval have signed Brazilian central defender João Paulo from Goiás.

Benfica's unsettled right back Miguel unilaterally rescinded his contract Monday via an 11-page letter stating his reasons (not yet revealed publicly). The rescission has been received with surprise by Benfica because the representatives of the Portuguese international had previously claimed that there was no valid contract, but now by implication there would seem to be one.

Brazilian left-winger Clayton, formerly of Sporting and FC Porto and last season at Gil Vicente, has joined Vitória de Guimarães on a one-year contract.

And at the last minute ... Tomasson did not plump for Benfica but for Stuttgart. When everything was settled between clubs (Benfica and AC Milan), Tomasson's agent came up with some financial demands that Benfica could not comply with ... according to Benfica Director José Veiga, who promised another big name signing for the same position in the coming days.

It only remains for Jon Dahl Tomasson, 28, to okay the deal for the Danish striker to move to Benfica from AC Milan on a four-year contract. The Benfica board hope to be able to present him to the fans at Sunday's friendly with Chelsea (20.00).

Sure to be present at the Luz is Brazilian left back Léo, who has signed a three-year deal. Léo bought his own pass from Santos for 250,000 dollars to become a free agent.

Benfica have loaned Brazilian central defender André Luís to Marseilles.

Lithuanian striker Edgaras Jankauskas, whose contract with FC Porto terminated this week, has joined Scottish club Hearts on a three-year contract. Porto loaned him out to Nice last season.

The Luís Figo saga continues. After his dream of joining Liverpool appeared to collapse following coach Rafael Benitez's comments Monday (see below), Inter Milan now appear to be interested, but any move will depend on the close season clearout from the Italian club.

The deal between Sporting and Sporting Braga to take three Braga players - João Alves, Wender and Nunes, to Alvalade appears to have fallen through, with Braga claiming that Sporting have changed the goalposts with regard to the previously agreed-on fees involved.

Nigerian defender Joseph Enakarhire appears finally and definitely to be on his way to Dynamo Moscow from Sporting for six million euros. Midfielder Luís Loureiro will go the other way.

Vasco Faísca of Italian club Vicenza, but loaned out to Académica last season, has moved to Belenenses at no cost. The defender, 24, on a contract until 2009, is Belenenses' 11th signing of the close season.

Spanish midfielder Toñito, formerly of Sporting but who spent last season at Boavista, has returned to his roots, namely Spanish second division side Tenerefe. Toñito, 28, who spent eight years in Portugal, has signed a three-year deal.

Luís Figo's dream of moving to Liverpool have hit an obstacle: the English club's Spanish coach Rafael Benitez. "We have two or three options for the right-hand side ... Figo's coming is really difficult," he said.

French 'keeper Yannick joins Brazilians André Luís, Everson and Paulo Almeida on the list of players released by Benfica for the new season. Meanwhile, Angolan folk hero Pedro Mantorras has extended his contract with the club until 2011.

Brazilian striker Luís Fabiano has joined Spanish club Seville from FC Porto.

The Gabonese striker Antchouet has signed for four years for Spanish club Alavés. His previous club, Belenenses, are claimning irregularities and may refer the claim to FIFA.

Despite rumours to the contrary, João Pinto will be staying at Boavista for at least another season. He has been given the captain's arm-band by new coach Carlos Brito.

Mário Loja, 27, has joined second-division French side Créteil-Lusitanos on a free. Loja went down from the SuperLiga with Beira-Mar last season.

Sanibal Orahovac, 26, of Serbia-Montenegro, has joined Penafiel from Vitória de Guimarães on a two-year deal.

Hugo Leal, formerly of Benfica, Atlético Madrid and last season loaned out to Académica, has rescinded his contract with FC Porto, which was to last until 2008, and is now a free agent.

Central defender Hugo has joined fellow veterans Pedro Barbosa and Rui Jorge in being released from Sporting. The club has come in for some public crticism at the callous handling of the releases, given the players' length of service.

Sporting are to loan out Portuguese U-21 Lourenço to União de Leiria. as part of the deal that took defender Edson the other way. Lourenço spent last season on loan to Belenenses.

Sporting have sold Nigerian defender Enakarhire to Dynamo Moscow for six million euros plus midfidler Luís Loureiro, who only recently signed for the Russian club but wants to return to Portugal.

Andreii Karyaka of Russian club Krylia Sovetov Samara will undergo medical tests at the Luz next week prior to signing a four-year contract with champions Benfica.

Taça de Portugal winners Vitória de Setúbal have signed Mali international midfielder Mamadou Diakité, 20, from French club Metz.

Former Benfica and Belenenses midfielder Anders Andersson, 31, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Swedish champions Malmö.

Estrela da Amadora, newly promoted to the SuperLiga, have borrowed two players from Benfica: defender Amoreirinha and forward Manu. Also signed are midfielder Emerson from Maia and forward Anselmo, for four seasons, from Tourizense.

Paços de Ferreira, also newly promoted, have signed goalkeeper Peçanha from Brazilian club São Raimundo.

Boavista have signed Brazilian striker William Souza from Santos. He was presented to the press Tuesday along with another important signing for the Panteras: midfielder Manuel José from Vitória de Setúbal. Boavista president João Loureiro also said that João Vieira Pinto, thought to be on his way out of the club, may now stay.

Benfica are on the trail of Dortmund left back Dedé. If they get their man, it will be for four years and the Brazilian will earn 80,000 euros a month. They have also contacted the agent of Newcastle's Craig Bellamy about the possibility of the Welsh forward moving to Portugal.

Newcastle United have joined the queue of clubs interested in signing Luís Figo, out of favour at Real Madrid, but it has got no further than a contact as yet.

Brazilians Walter ('Minhoca') and Valney are in Madeira undergoing medical and physical tests after signing for Marírimo for four years. The former is a creative midfielder from Cruzeiro , the latter a central defender from CRB Alagoas.

Angolan forward Maurito has joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Jazira from União de Leiria for one million dollars.

FC Porto have signed 17-year-old wunderkind Anderson de Oliveira from Brazilian club Grêmio on a three-year contract.

FC Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa said Friday that Benni McCarthy will continue at the club next season. The South African striker wants to move to England, but an offer of six million euros from Blackburn Rovers did not match the nine million asked by Porto. Pinto da Costa also denied rumours that the club was interested in signing midfielder Hugo Viana from Newcastle. Viana spent last season on loan to Sporting.

Sporting Braga's top scorer last season, João Tomás, has been recalled by his club Real Bétis of Seville. The player spent a season on loan to Braga.

West Ham United, newly promoted to the English Premier League, are interested in Académica's young central defender José Castro. The Londoners are willing to pay the million euros that it would need to take the Portuguese U-21 international to Upton Park, and would offer the player a four-year contract.

União de Leiria have signed left back Anderson, 22, from Juventude de Caxias, free of charge because the Brazilian club was late with payment of salary. The contract for the Brazilian U-20 international will be for three years.

Seventeen-year-old midfielder Anderson of Brazilian club Grêmio is in Porto to discuss a possible signing for FC Porto. Anderson has been compared to Barcelona's Ronaldinho.

Sporting's central defender Enakarhire's transfer to Dynamo Moscow has hit a snag: his former club Standard Liége are claiming 25% of the fee, and Sporting want Dynamo to foot the bill ... something that the Russian club decline to do.

Sporting's Romanian striker Mariusz Niculae is on his way out of the club. Dogged by injures in the last couple of seasons, Niculae was asked to drop his salary by 70% to remain.

Belenenses have signed Estoril midfielder Pedro Pinheiro, 28, on a two-year deal.

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has revealed that both FC Porto and Benfica are in the hunt for midfielder Hugo Viana, still on Newcastle's books. He played for Sporting on loan last season, but Shepeherd said that his continuation at Sporting is out of the question.

Spanish sports paper Marca reported Tuesday that Real Madrid are prepared to offer Luís Figo in part exchange for Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Cameroonian midfielder Essame has joined Boavista from Paraguayan football.

Sports daily A Bola reports that an Englçish club, apparently Blackburn Rovers, has offered eight million euros for FC Porto's South African striker Benni McCarthy.

Middlesboro winger Zenden's father and agent has denied that there has been any concrete contact with Benfica over a possible transfer of the Dutchman to the Luz. Liverpool have apparently shown an interest in the player.

Paços de Ferreira, newly promoted to the SuperLiga, have signed Renato Queirós from União de Leiria, who thus returns to the club where he made his name.

Marítimo have acquired 40% of the pass of Brazilian midfielder Walter Minhoca, of Cruzeiro, with 25% of the pass being owned by Benfica player Geovanni.

French daily Le Parisien suggests that Marseilles are after Luís Figo, unsettled at Real Madrid, for whom he still has a year left on his contract. The major stumbling block to any transfer of the former World Player of the Year will be his salry, thought to be around 6 million euros a year.

After ten years in green and white hoops, the last few as club captain, Pedro Barbosa has been released by the club. The veteran midfielder criticised the coach (José Peseiro) and the administration of the club at the moment of his parting. He has said that he will not represent another club in Portugal, but he may well go abroad to finish off his career. Meanwhile, Ricardo Sá Pinto has extended his contract with the club for another year, while young midfield revelation João Moutinho has extended his until 2009.

Midfielder Sandro, who as captain led Vitória de Setúbal to Taça de Portugal triumph this season, is set to replace Costinha, signed by Dynamo Moscow, along with Maniche. Sandro will join ex-colleague Jorginho at the Estádio do Dragão.

Former Boavista midfielder Gouveia, who has represented Nacional of Madeira for the last couple of seasons, signed for Gil Vicente Monday.

Central defender José António is leaving Académica, bound for Spain, with Celta de Vigo the probable destination. He was wanted at Belenenses, but they have had to settle for Gaspar from Gil Vicente, on a two-season contract.

Newly promoted Naval of Figueira da Foz have signed left-winger Saulo from Rio Ave. While the newcomers start to build their team, the same cannot be said of their ground; modifications to the Estádio Municipal José Bento Pessoa are late and may not be finished in time for the start of the season.

União de Leiria will only see around 300 thousand euros of the 500 thousand fee for left back Edson, transferred to Sporting recently, because only part of the player's pass blonged to the club.

FC Porto secured the services Wednesday of former Benfica striker, Tomo Sokota, 28. He had been at Benfica for four years but had fallen out of favour in the second half of the season. His contract with the Dragões is for four years and is at no cost as the Croatian was out contract with Benfica. Porto are also tracking Fred, 21, high-scoring striker of Brazilian club Cruzeiro , and winger Alan of Marítimo

Following their triumph in the Taça de Portugal, Vitória de Setúbal have begun to recruit for the new season: Flávio, central defender, 23, (Dragões Sandinenses) and Sougou , Senegalese winger, 20 (União de Leiria) are the first in.

Goalkeeper Jorge Baptista, 28, has swapped relegated Estoril for Gil Vicente on a three-year contract.

Sporting are considering selling Cameroonian winger Douala and Portuguese International central defender Beto. They want 5 million for Douala, who has English and French clubs interested in his services.

Académica have signed Brazilian winger Fernando from Varzim on a three-year contract. The Coimbra club have also renewed with 'keeper Pedro Roma and utility player Andrade.

FC Porto's Brazilian strriker Luís Fabiano, whose mother was recently kidnapped in Brazil and subsequently rescued, has signed a four-year contract with Spanish club Seville . Porto will get 2.8 million euros for its 25% share of the player's pass.

Porto have signed Brazilian 'keeper Helton from União de Leiria for a fee of 1.5 million euros. The contract is until 2010.

Sporting have made their first signing of the close season: Brazilian striker Manoel, out of contract at relegated Moreirense, for three years and at no cost.

Meanwhile, forward Sã Pinto, who had a good season after coming back from long-term injury, has renewed for Sporting for a year with another as optional.

Paulo Sérgio has moved from Sporting Braga to neighbours Vitória de Guimarães on a two-year contract. It is new coach Jaime Pacheco's first signing for Vitória.

Belenenses have released dependable midfiuelder Marco Paulo because, according to the Administration of the club, "he isn't skillful enough" for the Belenenses of the future.

Sporting Braga's Brazilian forward Cesinha has renewed with the club for an extra three years.

'Keeper Nuno Santos and central defender Odair have both been released by Penafiel. The club's board will take a decision later in the week on whether to take up the option on Brazilian midfielder Sydney. The club have signed Brazilian 'keeper Vinícius Martinez, 23, from Segunda B side Camacha. He joins another 'keeper Carlos Germano and Frenchman Boronad Guillaume, 26, a midfielder, from Rouen, who signs on a four-year contract.

Former FC Porto and Lázio winger Sérgio Conceição has renewed his contract with Belgian side Standard Liège until 2008.

FC Porto's Greek right back Seitaridis has been sold to Dynamo Moscow for a fee of 10 million euros.

Boavista have begun their summer clearout following a disappointing second half to the season that saw them miss out on a European place. Captain Martelinho, at the end of his contract, has been released, while the club will not take up options on Felipe Flores and Ambassa. Milhazes and João Pedro will be loaned out. The decisions on these players have been taken in consultation with new coach Carlos Brito, who moves in from Rio Ave.

Sporting's Brazilian midfielder Fábio Rochemback has said that he wants to stay in Lisbon for another season. He is on loan from Barcelona, with whom he has a contract until 2006.

Sports daily A Bola reported Friday that Sporting 'keeper Ricardo will be on his way at the end of the season. There is, apparently, interest from England and Spain for the Selecção's first choice between the posts. The fee would be 5 million euros. Boavista, the club Ricardo left two seasons ago, would be entitled to 20% of that fee.

The same paper says that Ricardo's replacement should be the Brazilian Helton, 27, who has been at União de Leiria for two and a half season. The fee would be 1.5 m euros . Also in the running for Helton are FC Porto and Corinthians of Brazil.

One of only two survivors of Boavista's championship-winning side of 2000/01, Martelinho, is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. A possible destination is Vitória de Guimarães to join up with his old coach at Boavista, Jaime Pacheco. The other 'survivor' is goalkeeper William. Also on the way out of the Bessa is central defender Éder, who has not been a first choice in the second half of the season. He still has two seasons left on his contract.

Dynamo Moscow have signed the FC Porto pair Maniche and Costinha for 14m and 6m euros respectively. The Russian big-spenders are also interested in Porto right back Seitaridis.

FC Porto's Champions League-winning team has been all but dismantled; only Vítor Baía, Jorge Costa and Benni McCarthy remain from the starting line-up of last season's final. Porto have made 115m euros since then with transfers out, but they have bought in a lot of players that have not added value to the team, and there is set to be another revolution this close season.

Japanese club Urawa Reds are hoping to sign Real Madrid's Portuguese international Luís Figo for next season. Figo has not had a happy time at the Spanish giants recently, spending much of his time warming the bench.

FC Porto are to release Claudio 'Pitbull', Areias and Leo Lima. Their Brazilian international forward Luís Fabiano is interesting Seville.

Deportivo La Coruña are interested in Benfica midfielders Petit and Manuel Fernandes, while the Spanish club's Portuguese central defender Jorge Andrade may be heading for England.

Moreirense striker Manoel, at the end of his contract, is deciding where to move to since he will not want to stay at the northern club if they go down, which seems likely. Nacional and Belenenses are two of the clubs that are interested.

Belenenses midfielder Juninho Petrolina is facing disciplinary action from the club for undisclosed reasons and looks certain to be released.

Vitória de Setúbal midfielder Manuel José is leaving the club, and his destination may be Boavista.

A Bola reports that FC Porto midfielders Costinha and Maniche are set to join Dynamo Moscow in the close season for a joint fee of 20 million euros. Alexei Fedorichev, president of Dynamo, admitted, however, that as Maniche has offers from others clubs, notably Manchester United, he may go elsewhere.

João Pinto may be on his way from Boavista. The player re-joined Boavista in the close season from Sporting but has not been a regular first choice by coach Jaime Pacheco, which has not gone down well with the former international; he was not even on the bench for Boavista's 3-2 win over Marítimo at the weekend. João Pinto said Tuesday that he is considering a four-month offer from Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia.

FC Porto have signed two Brazilians: midfielder Leandro do Bonfim, 22, from PSV and Ibson da Silva, 21, from Flamengo. Meanwhile, the club has loaned winger Maciel out to Brazilian club Atlético Paranaense.

Benfica have signed Serbian striker Andrija Delibasic, 23, on loan from Mallorca.until the end of the season. Benfica have lent defender Amoreirinha to Estoril.

Boavista have signed giant Cameroonian central defender Georges Ambassa, 23, from Cameroonian club Canon Yaounde. Ambassa was suspended in the Cameroons for one year after hitting a referre who showed him a red card.

Moreirense have signed former Boavista and Sporting midfielder Delfim, on contract to Olympique de Marseilles until 2006, until the end of the season. No fee is involved.

A Portuguese group of investors has acquired the pass of Brazilian midfielder Ibson for two million euros from Rio de Janeiro club Flamengo. The investors are expected to try to place the player in a Portuguese club, possibly FC Porto.

Former FC Porto and Sporting star striker Mário Jardel, 31, looks likely to sign for Alavés of the Spanish second division. He has a contract with Argentinian club Newell's Old Boys until the end of the season but is claiming unpaid salary as a way out of the contract. His contract with Alavés would be until the end of the season, with two more as optional.

Gil Vicente are set to sign Brazilian striker Val Baiano, 23, from Brazilian club Brasiliense, at zero cost. He will replace compatriot Júlio César, who has gone to AEK Athens.

Senegalese midfielder N'Doye, 26, who was at Estoril until last month, has signed for Penafiel until the end of the season, with two more as optional.

Académica have signed Brazilian forward Marcel, 23, from Korean club Suwon Samsung Bluewings. The players asking price was 1.6 million euros, so it is probable that another club is behind the transfer and has ceded the player to Os Estudantes.

Brazilian giants Flamengo are desperate to sign Brazilian midfielder Roger, unwanted at Benfica, but are less keen to cover his reported 77,000 euros a month salary. They are willing to offer midfielder Ibson in part exchange.

Benfica seem to have missed the boat in relation to Argentinian striker Maxi López, who is expected to sign for Barcelona in the coming hours.

Sports daily A Bola reported Saturday that creative midfielder Nuno Assis has joined Benfica from Vitória de Guimarães on a three-and-a-half year contract. He has joined on loan from Dynamo Moscow, who have acquired the player's pass for 600 thousand euros. Sporting, Assis' first club, had first preference on the player but declined to take it up.

Dynamo Moscow are attacking the Portuguese market with full force. They have recently signed six players from Portuguese teams: the Portuguese players Cícero (ex-Sporting Braga), Fréchaut (Boavista), Danny (Sporting) and Jorge Ribeiro (Gil Vicente), and the Brazilians Derlei and Thiago (both FC Porto).

Dynamo Moscow, with their Abramovich-like president Fedorychev, are also said to have their sights on some of the main stars of Portuguese football: Simão, Miguel and Ricardo Rocha of Benfica, Liedson and Custódio of Sporting and McCarthy and Costinha of FC Porto.

FC Porto's new signing Claudio Pitbull will not be able to make his début against União de Leiria Sunday because his international pass has not arrived from Brazil. There was a public holiday on Friday in Brazil.

Maxi Lopes' move to Benfica hit a snag Friday as Barcelona moved in with a 5.5 million euros bid for the River Plate striker. Benfica thought they had secured the Argentian through an investment fund that had offered 4.8 million, but Barça's bid has muddied the waters.

Benfica's French 'keeper Yannick has moved to Estoril Praia, on loan until the end of the season. He has never been an option at the Luz after moving there from Alverca in the close season; the goalkeeping has been shared between Moreira and Quim.

Beira-Mar have signed forward Ahamada from French club Nantes on loan until the end of the season.

Cameroonian international defender Ambassa, 23, is undergoing trials at Boavista with a view to signing permanently with the club. He is a free agent, so no money would have to change hands. Boavista's defence was shown up Sunday when it shipped four at Benfica.

Benfica have signed Brazilian central defender André Luiz, 25, capped once for Brazil. Luis has most recently played for Santos, winning the Brazil championship in 2002 and 2004. His contract finished at Christmas, so Benfica acquire his services, on a three-and-a-half-year contract, for nothing. The player is seen as an immediate replacement for Argel, who may join Racing Santander of Spain, and a possible long-term replacement for Luisão, who may well be on his way at the end of the season.

As reported here previously, Sporting have presented new signing, the Brazilian forward Mota, 23, on a six-month contract after a spell in South Korea with the Chunnam Dragons , where he scored 14 goals in 22 games. Sporting have the option to extend his contract at the end of the season.

Interviewed by TSF Radio, Brazilian striker Mário Jardel, 31, said that he would welcome the chance to return to Portugal, especially if it was to help Benfica win the title. He also said that he had been contacted recently by representatives of Penafiel and Boavista. Jardel had two very successful spells with FC Porto and Sporting, but left the latter under a cloud when his marriage broke up. He has most recently played for Newell's Old Boys of Argentina, but is currently a free agent.

The transfer market is hotting up in Portugal in this transfer window.

Benfica and midfielder Zlatko Zahovic, 34, have rescinded by mutual consent the contract that bound the player to the club until the end of the season. Turkey or Greece are the likely destinations of the Slovenian international.

Benfica and Sporting are in the race to sign much prized Vitória de Guimarães midfielder Nuno Assis. His contract runs out at the end of the season, and the northern club will be looking to cash in on him while they still can.

Sporting are set to sign Brazilian forward Mota, 23, on a six-month contract after a spell in South Korea with the Chunnam Dragons, where he scored 14 goals in 22 games.

FC Porto officially presented Tuesday Brazilian left back Leandro, who has been at the club for some time but was injured, and forward Leo Lima, 22, also Brazilian, from Marítimo . Midfielder Carlos Alberto is heading out of the club, destination Corinthians of Brazil.

Another Brazilian, the Fluminense defender Leonardo Moura, 26, also seems to be on his way to Portugal, this time to represent high-flying Sporting Braga.

Penafiel have signed two left-sided defenders: Hungarian international Vasas Zoltan, 25, from Nyirgyhaza Spartacus, and Frenchman Kelly Berville, 27, from French side Chevignon.

Vitória de Setúbal's star forward, the Brazilian Jorginho, who recently had a foot in Sporting before the deal fell through, looks like to be heading for France, possibly Bordeaux.

Sporting's Chilean utility player Rodrigo Tello is wanted on a six-month loan by his previous club Universidade de Chile. Sporting and the player would be happy at the move, but the Lisbon club wants Universidade to contribute to Tello's salary, which the Chileans are not keen on.

Académica, struggling at the foot of the SuperLiga, are looking to reinforce in January. They have their eyes on midfelder Calado, formerly of Benfica and Bétis, now at Spanish second division club Poli Ejido, and Raul Meireles of FC Porto, formerly of Boavista, the latter on a loan deal.

Serginho, 18, midfielder with Pedras Rubras, is spending a 10-day trial period at Premiership side Chelsea. Sporting, meanwhile, have lodged a complaint with FIFA over Chelsea's 'poaching' of three young Lions: Adrien Silva, Fábio Ferreira and Ricardo Fernandes, all currently training with the London side.

Marítimo have signed Peruvian striker Abel Augusto Lobaton Espejo, 27, recommended by former Marítimo coach Paulo Autuori, now coach of the Peruvian national side.

Sporting Braga have signed Israeli international full back Ilan Bahar, 29, until May.

Brazilian forward Derlei, hero of FC Porto's domestic and European exploits in the last couple of seasons, has been sold to Dynamo Moscow for seven million euros. He follows Portuguese players Fréchaut of Boavista and Danny of Sporting who have both gone to the same club this week. Dynamo are also interested in signing Jorge Ribeiro , international full back of Gil Vicente and brother of FC Porto's midfielder Maniche. Derlei has had a poor season and was recently the subject of disciplinary measures at the club when he returned late from the Christmas holidays, along with Diego and Maciel.

Porto are also looking to offload the gifted but wayward Carlos Alberto, Brazilian club Corinthians the most likely destination, with Chelsea waiting in the wings. Carlos Alberto was occasionally impressive under the now-Chelsea coach José Mourinho last season, but does not seem to have impressed Vítor Fernandez this.

Benfica appear to have secured the signing of Argentinian striker Maximiliano 'Maxi' Lopez from River Plate. If the deal goes through, Lopez will be the fourth Argentinian to don the Benfica shirt after strikers Claudio Caniggia and Mauro Airez and ´keeper Bossio, none of whom impressed greatly at the Luz.

The central defender Ricardo Silva, currently without a club but who has previously represented FC Porto, Vitória de Guimarães and Boavista, is set to sign for Beira-Mar.

Nacional have signed left back Alonso, 24, from Brazilian club Paysandu. The Madeiran side have had trouble finding someone on the left to replace the excellent Rossato, a permanent member of last season's side that won a place in the UEFA Cup. this season has been a poor one so far for Nacional.
