FC Porto right back Ricardo Pereira has replaced João Cancelo, injured.



Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes, captain of the U-21s, has been called up for the senior squad to replace the injured Pizzi of Benfica. Fernandes has had a brilliant start to the season for top-of-the-table Sporting.



Surprises in Fernando Santos’ call-up for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers: the inclusion of Fábio Coentrão, Sporting’s left back, who still seems to be returning to full fitness, and striker Nélson Oliveira, playing for Norwich in the English Championship (second tier). Also called up: Benfica’s young keeper Bruno Varela and Leipzig’s Bruma. There’s no return for last summer’s European Championship heroes Éder and Renato Sanches; the later goes to the U-21s.

The games: Faroe Islands (home, 31/08/17) and Hungary (away, 03/09/17).

The Seleção will play Cyprus on 03 June in Estoril, a friendly to prepare for the World Cup qualifier versus Latvia away, on 09 June. Then there is the Confederations Cup between 17 June and 02 July in Russia.

Coach Fernando Santos announced 25 May the squad for these games, made up of 24 players; one will subsequently be cut. Surprise ommissions from the squad are France 2016 heroes Éder and Renato Sanches.

Portugal will play Sweden in a friendly on 28 March in Funchal, Madeira. The venue will the recently renovated, 10,600-seat Estádio dos Barreiros, home to Marítimo. It’s the first time the Seleção has played in Madeira for 16 years, and the first time Cristiano Ronaldo will play for his country in his homeland.
